4 Month old trying to feed himself

I’ve been given the go ahead to wean my baby onto solids. He’s 4 and a half months.

After about a week of weaning he’s already to determined to use the spoon himself. he reaches for the spoon and pulls it into his mouth, i’ve let go of the spoon and started to allow him to do it himself seeing as he seems intrigued in doing so.

I’ve heard of older babies doing this but never a 4 month old!! is it ok for me to let him use the spoon himself? Will it effect his development in using the spoon correctly?! Or should I refrain him for doing so for a while?! I mean it’s only been a week, if that!!

Just worried he’s a little too young to use a spoon himself. I’m properly being a little too paranoid. but just wondered if anyone had any experience or knowledge in this??

It is perfectly fine to give him the spoon.

He is not young to be doing this, in my experience (nursery worker with babies) most babies do this.

As long as you are supervising him (which ofc you would be at meal times anyway!) then let him explore :)

Have you ever met anyone who couldn’t use a spoon because their Mum let them use one themselves as a baby? 😜

Absolutely! Encourage your little one, use a spoon for babies which will allow safe feeding and wont let them to put the spoon to deep.
Your baby is showing confidence, enthusiasm and eagerness to learn - always support that. Also suggesting it looks like your baby will be finger foods fan, so perhaps try that too in few weeks time. Have fun!
