i have dt age 7 in seperate classes at school (my choice) the one will only play with boys and the other only plays with girls. He does not have one friend who is a boy apart from his brother. He is quite shy and not very confident at school. a couple of other mums have started to make comments like - oh isn't weird xxx only plays with the girls. I wasn't worried until this. do you think i should be worried? I don't know how to get him to play with boys, but on the otherhand he goes to football club and enjoys that (although doesn't actively try to get the ball)
sorry its so long :-(

I really wouldnt worry, he is only 7 and maybe he just hits it off with the girls more. I have 3 sons aged 11 8 and 4. 11 and 4 yr olds have only boys as friends really, but 8 yr old has a mix, and best friends are prob girls, they are all different, and really you want to encourage a man in touch with his femanine side for future generations!

so you really don't think i need to worry?

What is there to worry about? I don't understand what you are concerned about. My DD now 12 had a boy as her best friend right the way through primary school. They are still mates now albeit not as close. So what if he likes girls? Just ignore the comments.

ChipButty · 14/10/2007 07:48

Ignore them! As long as your DS is happy, it's fine!

DS1 is 6. His best friends at school are girls. He does sometimes play with some of the boys, but he definitely prefers playing with the girls. Not worried at all. I'd ignore the mums who have made these comments. Or if they mention it again, ask them exactly why they consider it weird!

My ds is 7, he does play with boys but seems to get on better with the girls (at school anyway). We have both over to play and the atmosphere is much calmer when a girl is over. I'm definately keener on the girls!

I wouldn't worry about your ds, if he is happy, that's the important thing.

thank you all for your thoughts, i feel much better now. It is silly to worry about it isn't it?

I always worry when people make comments and then worry that I should have been worrying before iyswim. I love Mumsnet
