hi everyone,
my 7 nearly 8 month old has started to really scream and cry when getting ready for bed and sometimes when nappy/ clothes changed in the day. He used to love these times, lots of lovely interaction but now not so fun any tips? will this pass?
thanks x

OOh, not sure. Does he try and escape? My DD is virtually impossible to change / lay down without an army of people holding her down. She just hates being dressed / undressed(she's 13 months) it wasn't always this bad, just hates being messed about I guess. Maybe it's about them trying to become more independent.

thanks ginger, he's not trying to escape just really pissed off! it may well be something to do with independance, he loves to be on the floor playing!

LOL yep they all do that - that's your common or garden 'I don't see why I should lie turtle like while you muck around when I could be rolling around' (or in DDs case, standing up and legging it with poo all over her bare bum!)

It won't pass for quite a while either.

You can try the following:

(1) Something for your DS to hold while you change him
(2) A shaving mirror on a stand so he can coo at himself (DD likes this one) - you have to put it where he can't reach it though otherwise they whop you and themselves over the head with it.
(3) Singing to them as you do it.
(4) Holding legs together (theirs) and lifting them up in one movement and changing them really quickly (quite hard this one!)
(5) I also let Dd put her hands in the clean water in a top and tail bowl which distracts her, while I clean her up (however this does make them pee so best avoided if you have just changed them!)

Good luck, if you do find a solution which works, do let me know, my nearly one year old just ups and legs it almost every time! She's wee'd on me, the cat and even the postman as she's run away recently

Sore bum?

allthegearnoidea · 13/10/2007 21:07

thanks for all the suggestions, the mirror one is good, bubs is very vain!!
it's so unpredictable really, he suddenly just flips sometimes. it helps sometimes if he has a little toy to focus on. I just try to be confident and quick when he goes off on one!!

so been there...

i tend to sing "hop little bunny" rather hysterically which kind of scares my lo into submission.....

ja9 · 13/10/2007 21:13

i'd second singing / peekaboo games and giving your ds a toy thing to hold while you are changing him. with ds i used one of those wee wind up musical tv type toys.

sure it will pass tho'.

ja9 · 13/10/2007 21:14

lol at CWE singing 'hysterically'!!

cheeset · 13/10/2007 21:31

Yeah, I remember singing so loudly that I made more noise than my 2 dc and they couldn't hear their own moaning-it was usually ABBA.

gingerninja · 13/10/2007 21:38

we have taken to using a beenbag. Not as easy to escape from

jogym · 13/10/2007 21:47

I have resorted to using the easy up pants and change my DD (nearly 1) standing up holding on to the sofa excluding dirty nappy times obviously. She too was hysterical at nappy times and the two of us were having to do it together. Now at the dirty nappy changes she lies on changing mat and has developed a I will kick my legs as hard as I can when you pull off my nappy because it's really a lot of fun not so when there's poo everywhere.

blazingsandals · 13/10/2007 21:51

Oh god Jogym - you just bought back the memory of me telling DH off for giving DD chocolate when she was bouncing in her door bouncer - because she'd dropped it and was dancing in the mess....only it wasn't chocolate

She's very keen not to be changed and won't let us know if she's done an enormous poo - the stench and the steam normally gives her away though
