Food for an upset tummy

Hi....

Not sure where to post this - I hope you can help :-)

My son (18 months) has caught one of those diariah (??) bugs that's going round. I am letting his bottom air as much as possible but am unsure of what to feed him to try to firm things up.

I would really be grateful for any advice.

Thanks

no food at all
rehydration salts or flat coke to drink

If you really can't starve him then avoid dairy, my gp always said chicken, fish and vegetables - as plain as possible.

Bananas. Plenty of fluids. Loads of TLC.

White rice, paticularly risotto rice which is nice and sticky. Don't add butter, only olive oil (or similar seed oil). You can add carrots or other root veg (peeled) but go slow on other types of veg.

No dairy, except perhaps yogurt, depending on how bad he is, and fruit wise go for things like raw apple (peeled) or banana. Avoid citrus and berries and anything with seeds in it.

My DD's going through the same thing right now and feeding her just rice and bits seems to have done the trick (phew)

Also - if he's still got an upset tummy after 24 hours - go to the pharmacy and ask if he's old enough to take kaolin and morphine - a 'white medicine' whcih is good for calming things down. It takes 24 hours for the body to get rid of the bugs so good to let it get on with it for that length of time.

thanks :-)

he will eat plain bread at the moment so we will stick with that....

I bought a special porrige for rehydration but the little tinker won't touch it....

Do you think banana would be ok?

Yes, plain toast is good too.

I forgot to mention plenty of water.

Banana is 100% ok and is tradionally used to 'balance the motions' as it were. Very good with diarrhoea or constipation.
