Very worried mama - advice pleased!

Hi everyone,

I’ve decided to seek advice on here as I think I’m on the verge of going insane with worry!

Basically, my daughter (first baby) is only just 9 months old, and up until about 5 months she used to coo and make the odd noise, all quite normal for her age. Anyway, since 5 months old she has become very very quiet. So quiet that I would say I only hear her make a noise for a total of probably 2 minutes in a whole 24 hour period (other than crying and letting me know she isn’t happy!).

She’s very smiley, happy, lots of eye contact, she adores books and gets anticipation in games etc, I sing to her lots, so lots of repetition with sounds etc etc but nothing seems to work. I asked the HV to do a review when she was 6.5 months old as I was worried, and she said “I’ve never seen anything like this before, she’s a mystery” and asked the GP to refer to a paediatrician. The paediatrician wouldn’t see her without her having a hearing test which has finally been done this week (big delay because of Covid) and she passed the hearing test, no issues with hearing at all. There is now a big waiting list to see the paediatrician (been told it will be next year) and I am going out of my mind with worry. The only noises she will ever make is sort of an “ahhhh” sound but in very particular circumstances. So she will only make this sound if she has a toy in her mouth and usually only when lying on her back. She will never make any noise whilst playing, won’t even squeal with excitement despite her having all the physical appearances of being very excited and scrunching up here face etc, just no sound at all. Am I right to worry, and does anyone have any advice at all?

Thank you in advance :)

I've not heard of this before, and I know it's very MN but I'm going to suggest trying baby signing with her, at least until you've spoken to the Consultant.

Hi, she’s perfectly fine now! She just started making noise when she was 11 months old and she’s now almost 2 and is NEVER quiet! The paediatrician thinks she had a delay but is now all caught up :)
