DS is 17 mths and often takes to throwing his food - I don't mind it being dropped etc etc - but I do object to the forceful throwing - today a babybel cheese hit me on the forhead. I've told him no etc but he just thinks its a game - I'm fed up with it. On a positive note its been noted that he has good throwing skills for his age (especially with balls). How do you get them to understand thank flinging food with force is not ok??????

callmeovercautious - DS does the same - he's much worse at throwing food when he's being watched, but still lobs the plate on the floor with whatever is still in it when he's had enough. It makes me want to cry if I've spent ages making his food and it ends up decorating the lino.

Hi all its really good to know that DS is not the only food flinger!!! - I think the idea of blanking him might be a good idea as I have noticed that when I tell him off now he wags his finger back at me (yep - I do this!!!) - on a good day it makes me smile - don't show it of course - but just goes to show how they copy your every move!!!

LOL at this one! I also have a champion shot putter in training at 18 months! Not solved it yet but getting better at spotting when he's going to throw something (the arm goes back!) and saying 'in your mouth' - often this works if I catch him in time. Try to ignore any food thrown; but he doesn't get it back once it's off the tray.

I also realised that he does not do it when he really wants it, only when he's getting full, this is difficult to guage as he is at nursery so I don't really know how much he has eaten during the day. I taught him a baby sign for 'full up' and 'more' - didn't know the real ones so I made some up, and this really seems to work! As soon as he makes the sign for full up, I know the food needs to go otherwise I have another evening of mopping the floor ahead! Might be worth trying, he picked up the signs really quickly.

pelvicflawed - have you had any success? my dd (nearly 14mo) has been getting into trouble at nursery for throwing food nd they have mentioned they are worried that the other (younger) babies will copy her . i was quite embarrassed as they were obviously not impressed!
let me know what works for you!!

I don't think I have laughed so hard at a mumsnet thread - thankyou Pelvicflawed, you need a column in a newspaper or something.

Anyway, our DS is 'pitching' food pretty well at the moment and is, literally, doing my head in. Has also started throwing toys and other hard objects...

Will try the ignore approach - easier said than done...

My daughter's 14 months old and I've got exactly the same thing going on. When I bend down to retrieve a raisin or a bit of potato from the floor, as often as not another one hits me on the back of the head. I don't shout and I don't get cross (except silent fuming), just say no and ask her if she wants to eat whatever it is, but I am really starting to wonder how long it goes on for. I reckon she's been like this for about six months. One thing that helps slightly is not to give her too many things on her plate at the same time. But I only mean slightly - there's still a lot of throwing going on. And tbh she gets fed up of her plate after ten minutes and that ends up on the floor, too, so who am I to be trying to give advice?!

dd 14 months is an expert food flinger, spend weekends wiping and mopping. When she's sitting on the floor she grabs tissues and wipes away herself!! I'm ignoring it at the mo but am wondering how long this particular phase goes on for

I am silently praying for someone to turn up and say "oh, only a week or two" but pretty sure that's not going to happen...
