Nearly 3 yr old eating paper

My nearly 3 year old DS has started trying to eat paper and other non-food items. He recently managed to eat a bite of a paint block at nursery and has tried to eat his foam paint stamps. We're having lots of issues with him eating, refusing lunch and dinner at nursery, where he will only eat crackers or rice cakes. Breakfast is generally ok. He's incredibly fussy at home and only wants to eat the same few foods.

We've also got some other concerns, his speech is very delayed and he is behind on some of his cognitive milestones, tending to reach them around 6 months 'late'. He's going to be assessed by the area SENCo.

Has anyone else experienced issues with their toddler eating non food items? Is this something he'll grow out of? How do I help him? Obviously I always try and stop him eating paper etc. Not sure how concerned I should be Sad

There is a condition called Pica, but personally I would not jump to any conclusions. If you have an appointment with the Area Senco team, I would wait and see what they suggest. Good luck .
