10 month old not babbling.

I’m becoming a little concerned over my son’s lack of babbling. He’s now 10 months old and is vocal in the sense of making noises, squealing and laughing, he can make some consonant sounds such as ‘mmmmm’ and my partner swears he says ‘mum’ and noises that sound like ‘hey’ and ‘hiya’ but there is no babble of mama, dada etc

It was asked at our 8 month review and DP stupidly answered yes that he does babble and I disagreed so it all became a bit awkward over the phone to the HV so I may give them a call this week.

He loves books and will spend a while looking at them independently, he’s read to and we do singing and rhymes every day. We’re always talking to him and attend a couple of baby / toddler groups a week plus a music & sensory session so I feel like we’re doing everything we should be doing.

Mine didn't really babble til a year old except for making a funny 'abooooo' sound when she got upset. She actually said a couple of words before she convincingly babbled and said 'ohoh' in context at 11MO. She's 2.5 now and still a tad unclear with her language but talking completely conversationally in long sentences. I was also worried when she was your child's age but never massively so as she always understood well from a very young age and did other social things like clapping/pointing/waving. Does your's do anything like this yet or seem to have any receptive language? How are other areas of development? Everything should be taken in context of the bigger picture really at this age and it's far too young to really know if much is going on. I'd say just keep an eye on things and see where he's at at 18MO. In the meantime a website called www.teachmetotalk.com is great for giving some ideas of how to help speech come along and the development of speech etc.

I will just add the only thing I would absolutely do is get his hearing checked. You should be able to self refer for this or call your GP. Even if you think his hearing is ok just a small drop in hearing can have a massive impact on speech at this age

@Jannt86 Thank you for your reply :) yes DS claps, waves and high fives (when he wants too!) seems to have receptive language eg: if someone comes in the front door, I’ll ask “who’s coming” and he looks towards and waits by the door. If I ask “what’s happening outside” he’ll look out of the window” etc so no concerns there.

He doesn’t seem to have any hearing issues and responds to his name, noises etc but I’ll give the GP a call and ask about a hearing test. I may also speak to the HV just for some advice.
