sorry i am having a paranoid moment again...about ds

He is talking really well now, but his pronunciation is still a bit immature (which is okay, isnt it? )

Its just his conversation. he waffles on forever about things but when people ask him questions he ansers inappropriately. Like if someone asks him his name he will say 'name, yes' or something similar even though he refers to himself as XXXXX, as in XXXXX play with thomas etc. He seems to get confused by conversation iykwim, is this normal? Am I expecting too much from him? Nursery seem to think he is fine.

Am i just being paranoid and is this normal? I am starting to sound neurotic!

snmum, I don't know much textbook stuff about speech development, but if nursery think he's fine then I wouldn't worry too much - remember that they see loads of children and so probably have a pretty good idea of what's 'normal' (which can be so variable at that age!).

Twiglett · 19/10/2004 16:53

nursery knows best

as for what's your name and answering with his name .. that's a learned response .. you actually have to teach him it .. also the same with 'how old are you?' ..

as for pronunciation .. there are still sounds that they're learning to say up to the age of 8 and beyond .. saw a chart the other day ..

I think you're paranoid and are starting to sound neurotic

.. and when are you changing your name?

iota · 19/10/2004 16:58

my 3 yr old id a chatterbox now, but not all of it is intelligble - my current favourite mispronunciation is 'zwebbber' for 'zebra'

snmum · 19/10/2004 17:12

LOL Twiglett

I dont know about my name, have evenb considered changing back to fio2 as i feel dirty now...................

dd does this sort of thing too. She can completely ignore what other people are saying to her, and just carries on with what SHE wants to say. We were at a restaurant yesterday and she would not even acknowledge that we were asking her what she would like to eat and carried on with her conversation- in the end we had to order without her opinion. Of course when the food came "But I wanted chicken not fish!"

gingernut · 19/10/2004 21:46

He sounds very similar to my ds, who'll be 3 in December. Infuriating!

Jimjams · 19/10/2004 23:14

chill snmum You are lucky that he says yes. Anything we say to ds2 is met with "NO Mummy no no no way mummy no way". Oh and his favourite phrase is if I say "are you an x" (for x subsitute anything, honey bunch, scallywag, menace, trouble" he'll say "no mummy I not a scallywag I a Thomas book" (WTF? Always a Thomas book!).

Also bear in mind how you speak to dd. When dh and I were out with him recently he said something odd like "bye bye door" and dh said "hmmmis that OK- sounds a bit autistic to me" I had to point out that he is living in a house where "bye bye door" is a normal thing to say- and is used a lot "byebye stairs, bye bye tv, bye bye any object" It's not surprising some of his phrases are a bit odd.

We should swap phone numbers (ring after school and you'll hear postman pat on the computer!) - I'm sure if you heard ds2's pronounciation you would be VERY reassured.

marthamoo · 19/10/2004 23:17

I think you should change it back as I still think of you as fio anyway.

Sorry, that is not addressing your question at all. Doesn't sound like you need to panic to me, ds2 comes out with some rather odd stuff too (if he doesn't know the answer he will just repeat the question).

thanks everyopne that has really reassured me

Jimjams you are right, we do alot of bye-bye objects aswell. Infact he made me laugh because the girl at his nursery said to him 'wheres is XXX(dd's name) today?" and he said dd at schoooooool and did the makaton sign for ages whilst putting his face up really close so she would look at him. It made me giggle a bit, i often think nursery think we are mad, especially as we dont come from round here. they most probably think all brummies live in messy houses and have 'strange' children

They do, don't they ?

Wallace · 20/10/2004 16:00

anyone else's 3 yr old have problems saying "Shrek"? The closest dd can managed is "fuck". When in the supermarket "Look Mummy! Fuck! Fuck! FUCK!"
Even ds (5) can only get as close as "Shwek"

zebra · 20/10/2004 16:16

That's what DD does, snmum. Most of her chatter consists of confirming or stating facts. Better that than strings of non-sequitors like DS is always doing.

Shall we start a new thread 2 find U a new name we all like? I vote 4 plummymummy. (P & L r the key parts).

snmum · 20/10/2004 17:05

plummymummy?? why, you cheeky so and so.

have you not got your msn working yet, woman??!!!

ds of 4 and a half is still stringing rhyming words 2gether and thinks it is all quite fun.. cheeky monkey he is. He has even built it up to 3 words like mummybummydummy.. 'bless' Oh and he makes up little songs too. Dont worry about speech, nursery are pretty on top of things like that.

handlemecarefully · 20/10/2004 23:02

Wallace - that's hilarious
