DS 16 months - walking on tiptoes a lot

is this normal? he's been walking for 3 months and was always flat on his feet before but now he predominantly walks on tip toes whether in shoes or not - should I be concerned? or is it just a weird and wonderful little "way"?

DS (18 months) does this on and off, I think maybe just because he can and he can go abit faster.

I still do this a lot when barefoot.

DH laughs at me.

I would talk it over with your GP just to check. I seem to remember in the NHS book ('birth to five' I think) they do suggest having it checked out but I could be wrong.

I also have a ds at 16 months who likes to walk on tip toes. I've put it down to the fact that he's also a lot more interested in what's on the kitchen worktop and trying to reach anything he shouldn't have!

Does it really need checking out?

Weegle · 11/10/2007 11:31

of course I now can't find my birth to five book! I'll take him up to clinic next week and ask about it, haven't been there for about 8 months, that'll be weird!

Thanks for your advice and stories.

Hi there

It is worth looking at as tiptoes walking can be an indicator of a few different conditions and it can also simply mean something as simple as restriction in achilles or thereabouts. There is the other quirk of some lo's just having a little habit for a while but because of the other possibilities I'd def get appt. A good paediatric chiropractor would be able to examine your lo and help put your mind at rest.

like what sort of conditions? I'm worried now and I can't get him seen until next week.

my ds used to also walk on tiptoes but they normally are not concerned by this unless still doing this at 2 my son no longer walks with tip toes but if worried just ask no harm but apparently quite common at this age its if they dont grow out of it

You may want to take a look at this link - but try not to worry right away. Kids are so different in everything they do.

Good luck

Just wanted to post as we had same experience with dd. She did this for a while around the age of your ds. Any photographs of her at this time show her up on the points of her toes most of the time. I got her checked out by a physio at the hospital I was working at and she recommended gentle exercises to help stretch her foot into a flat standing position. I would get it checked out for your peace of mind but hopefully will be nothing to worry about. Dd now almost 8yo, has no long term problems at all. Hth x

Hi Weegle

Sorry, didn't want to to make you overly worried, but just know it's worth checking out. Katendmom's link has lots of info and from all I've read I don't think it's common for it to mean anything horrid, so good to have the check and then be able to get things crossed off the list.

Best wishes xx
