Newborn hiccups - anyone?!

My baby is a few weeks old and has persistent hiccups since birth. I’m at my wits end trying to settle her, she’s clearly very uncomfortable after feeds and is hard to settle in her crib (especially at night).

Can anyone suggest what is causing this? We use gripe water but it’s not really doing anything. Desperate Mummy here! :(

My 7wk old son is the same, even when I was pregnant with him he always had hiccups!
From what I have read from a book called Babycues it is a sign of wind. This might be the case if she is hard to settle in her crib at night. If you lay your hand on her stomach while she is being difficult to settle can you feel bubbles moving?

The book recommends making sure baby isn't overfed, spacing out feeds if possible, spending alot of time looking for wind cues like windy smile, pedalling legs, chewing while sticking tongue out and then burping immediately after you see them.
I am still trying to learn the techniques so unsure how much it will help hiccups but certainly helps with tummy pain, goodluck finding the answer Smile

My DD is 14m old now but she was exactly like this as a newborn, and also in my belly. She grew out of persistent hiccups at around 4m, but still gets them quite easily, e.g. if she’s really full or excited, or tired. She finds them hilarious now.

We did have a lot of winding problems too early on. The best thing that worked for us was kind of rocking her up and down: sit with baby upright and facing you, gently recline baby backwards, then straight away lean them forward into a cuddle. That seemed to help dislodge a lot of the bubbles for us. Also a thing called RockIt (on Amazon), which jiggles the buggy/cot helped her get to sleep better. In our unscientific view it helped dislodge some of the bubbles too, although the product itself doesn’t make that claim.

I don’t think hiccups alone are a sign of anything. In our case she also developed eczema after I stopped BF at 6 weeks. I’d keep an eye out for any other signs of CMPA, just to be on the safe side.

Above all, congratulations and take all the cuddles! My toddler DD now says “naaaaw, mama” when I try and get her to rest on me, however briefly.

Our DD has lots of hiccups and restless after feeds. She had reflux but not all the symptoms. Wasn't picked up till her 6 week check at the GP (useless health visitor said it wasn't reflux 🙄).

After a few weeks on the reflux meds she settled right down and was a different baby 🥰

Maybe have a chat with the HV and don't be afraid to escalate to GP if you don't find their response satisfying.
