When did your child stop holding your hand?

Just responded to the thread on bedtime stories which made me think of this.

Dh took dd who's 7 out for the day and he said he thought it was lovely that she still wants to hold his hand. It wasn't that they were somewhere really crowded where we would automatically hold her. They were just walking along and she reached out for his hand. She does it to me too.

Just wondered if others can remember how long their kids chose to handhold.

My oldest still does at 12.5, if she isn't in a preteen hormonal mood with me.

zaphod · 17/10/2004 21:54

My 8 and 7 year old still do, but not the 10 year old.

Slinky · 17/10/2004 21:54

DD1 still does and she's 9

roisin · 17/10/2004 21:58

DS1 is 7, and still ALWAYS holds hands when out walking with us to and from school. DS2 (5.5) is not that bothered, and often runs on ahead, but ds1 wants to hold hands and chat.

dd2 aged 7, and ds1 aged almost 6 still do as well. Ds2 3.5 would if he could walk.

Irrelevant, but we met up with Miaou and her family for lunch today (we had a very nice time!) and her DD2 (5) voluntarily held my hand, which was very sweet.

And, when we stayed with ggglimpopo in Bordeaux a couple of weeks ago, her DD3 (8) held my hand.

And, when essbee and her kids came to stay in the summer, her DS (6) held my hand.

Awwwwww.

My baby, though (DS2, aged 11) hasn't voluntarily held my hand for so long I can't remember when he last did it (except when I've grabbed his for fun!).

My mother grabbed my hand to cross a country road when I was 24, gleefully pointing out the 'moo-cows' in the field

Twiglett · 17/10/2004 22:19

I'd like to hold JanH's hand too

JanH · 17/10/2004 22:23

Aww, thanks, twiggy. I would like to hold yours too

my dd 12 nearly 13 hasn't held my hand in public for ages, must be atleast 2/3 years.

My ds 2 refuses tohold my hand and I end up grabbing his wrist in very angry mummmy way.

my daughter and son both 11 still hold my hand - at their request when they feel comfy, am proud to say my 14yo still give me a kiss!

toddlerbob · 18/10/2004 03:17

I held my dad's hand as I strolled around Disneyland when I was 28.

marthamoo · 18/10/2004 07:25

Ds1 (8 in March) still holds my hand but drops it like a stone the second we go through the school gates. He also (since he went into the Juniors in September) won't tolerate a good bye kiss any more - we have a kind of sideways half-hug

He's still pretty cuddly at home though - so I know it's just a cool thing.

tigermoth · 19/10/2004 12:56

My 10 year old son begged me to hold his hand while we looked round a rather scary all boys grammar school yesterday.

He still very happily and regularly sits on my knee in public. Even when I ask him to get off.

roisin · 19/10/2004 13:43

Aw bless! I find scary grammar schools do that to me too TM, and green wellies as well.
