Ringo malaysia and feeding

Hi all,

I hope everyone is keeping safe in these epidemic times.

Our baby boy (3 months old), along with other diagnosed complications, has now been diagnosed with Ringo malaysia. We noticed, before this was diagnosed, that his feeding has become a struggle for him and whereas we use to feed him 120ml every three hours he now has dropped to 80 to 90ml (sometimes less) every two hours.

Aside from the drop in fluid intake, if he is fully awake at feed time, as soon as we start to put him into the feeding position, he starts to cry and when we put the bottle into his mouth gentle he struggles to latch on and when trying to drink he takes lots of pauses. Sometimes it can take up to an hour to feed him as we have to carry him around to soothe him.

We are having to wait 6 weeks now for a further appointment for the Ringo Malaysi to determine how severe his condition is but until then we were wondering if there are any parents here who have had/are experiencing the same with their babies.

Any help with suggestions on how to feed him without the discomfort he is having would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Tim

Sorry do you mean laryngomalasia? Where the baby has a floppy larynx? Ds had this and we found that feeding him sat upright worked best as the stridor sound was worse when he was laying down. He had a relatively mild case which he grew out of after a few months as his voice box hardened up. He's now 10 months and it's completely gone.

@MrFlibblesEyes thank you for your reply.
Yes I do mean this condition and it was called Ringo malaysia to us.

When you say "sat in an upright position " what age was your baby and do you mean bum on your leg and how did you support your baby when feeding?

Also did you feed him small amounts more often or did you not change his feeding routine?

Thing is we have yet to know how severe his condition is at the moment and also we changed our feeding bottles from tommee tippee to dr browns. Can you advise on what bottles you used.

Thank you

Tim

He had the condition since birth and he was diagnosed on new years eve so would have been about 10 weeks old at that point. Yes I would sit him on my lap and sit him completely upright with my hand behind his neck for support and the bottle almost horizontal (like you do for paced feeding). I didn't feed him small amounts, just around whatever was recommended for his age every 3/4 hours or so. We used the mam bottles and he always got on well with them. Fingers crossed your little one only had a mild case, I think it often sounds worse than it is. Fwiw he's completely fine now, no issues swallowing or breathing, even though he currently has a cold. He's also very loud and babbly so doesn't seem to be affecting his speech either.
