They spend a lot of time doing homework (eg 2-3 hours per night). One DS plays football, so he has his training and matches. The other DS has dog-walking and grass-cutting duty. They also both have church activities, and household chores (we are a family with five children and they all have to muck in).

They are not big MSN'ers, but the 13 year old does like tactical computer games. He does have to be prised away, but responds to limited hours on the PC.

cornsilk · 06/10/2007 14:26

Ds1 not gone to swimming, violin or cubs for 2 weeks due to friggin neopets. Even tho' I turn the PC off 'cos he doesn't go. Would get rid off the thing, but then I wouldn't be able to use it!

fortyplus · 06/10/2007 14:29

My nearly 14 ds1 is watching the rugby with his dad - but the only daytime tv he watches is sport. He sometimes plays computer games or PS2 downstairs for an hour or so after he's done his homework, but doesn't do MSN/Facebook etc at all - he's just not interested.

Ds2 age 12 is out in the garden pretending to be Dr Who being chased by aliens...

BecauseImWereWolfit · 06/10/2007 14:30

Yes. It is driving me mad.

DS1 (15) is on MSN all the time and has to be strongly coerced off it. He bitterly resents it, just as I bitterly resent the fact that he would rather talk to his mates than be with his family. He does, though, play the guitar and has just started lessons (and formed his own band)

DS2 is on the Wii all the time. If not on the Wii he sneaks on to my laptop and plays computer games on there.

At least during the summer DS1 plays cricket, but DS2 has no other interests and just doesn't get why I think it's so important. The only thing he really wants to do is to learn to play the drums - and I have finally given in and arranged lessons for him. (Biggest concern is not having the room for a drumkit at home for him to practice on).

I'm currently waging a campaign to reduce time spent on various computers, and to re-introduce reading - but I do feel like I'm pushing an awful lot of water up a very steep hill.

BeetrootMNRoyalty · 06/10/2007 14:31

I just don't get sitting around all the time

watching TV

I don't know kids that do this

My teens have done this when not horizontal in bed or otherwise lurking in their lairs. But as soon as an interesting proposition comes up they assume Mach speed and are out of the place.

cornsilk · 06/10/2007 14:40

I did it as a teenager. Could it be genetic I wonder?

vacua · 06/10/2007 14:43

my youngest is only 8 and she's out playing with friends, middle one (15) is working her way through all the Scrubs, Mighty Boosh, Hollyoaks etc that she sky+d in the week, eldest (17) is making some food after going out shopping with one of her skanky mates

goingfriggincrazy · 06/10/2007 14:43

My stroppy pre-teen is the same...but what am I doing? errrr *quickily logs off msn...hmmm

BecauseImWereWolfit · 06/10/2007 14:44

Can I also just say that I never thought mine would be like this ...

It just seems to happen. Especially if you buy them the dratted equipment in the first place.

BeetrootMNRoyalty · 06/10/2007 14:45

I'm sure as darkness falls they'll be munching pills and snorting stuff and having sex like normal teenagers, try not to worry

saffy202 · 06/10/2007 14:46

The only tv ds1 watches is Sky Sports News, cricket and football and he likes the Real Hussle. Both ds's would rather be out playing some sort of sport, ds1 is at badmington now.

He probably spends up to an hour each day on the pc.

goingfriggincrazy · 06/10/2007 14:48

Laughs @vac....gives us more time to hog the pc if they are out being normal

Sometimes.... but then they work and play hard so why not!

unknownrebelbang · 06/10/2007 15:41

My boys don't MSN (I do)

They watch TV, but they don't have the time to watch it for hours.

unknownrebelbang · 06/10/2007 15:45

Mine have just spent over four hours at karate, one is at rehearsals, one will be at rehearsals later and tomorrow.

They're cooking a snack at the moment, but no doubt will put the TV on once they've eaten. I have no problem with this.
