Referrral for small head

Hi all. This is my first thread on here, all new to this!
My 9 week old DS2 has been referred to a paediatrician due to his small head. He’s on the 0.4 percentile, so very low. I can’t stop googling and finding some truly terrifying things, microcephaly amongst other severe learning difficulties etc. I am going out of my mind waiting for the appointment, terrified about what we are going to hear. He’s going for a cranium ultrasound then a follow up appointment.
Does anyone have any experience with this that could potentially put my mind at ease?

Is his head in proportion to the rest of him? Is his cranium in proportion to his face? Is he feeding easily and gaining weight? Do you or his dad have smaller than average heads?

If you're answering yes to any/all of those I'd be less concerned.

Not the same thing, but my son was referred for a cranial ultrasound due to macrocephaly (his head was so big it was off the chart) at around the same age, and I remember feeling so worried - and feeding the fear with Dr Google.

My son simply has a whopper of a head, nothing wrong. Hopefully your boy just happens to have a small head - it is absolutely possible to have benign microcephaly.

Wishing you a happy outcome with the scan Flowers

Thank you Smile
Now it’s been mentioned it does look a little on the small side at certain angles, we can’t stop analysing his head now! But would say he necessarily looks out of proportion and friends/family hadn’t noticed it.
My partner has a big head and so does DS1. I guess my head is smaller than average, my mum has to wear children’s glasses cos her head is small. He’s been feeding from birth and gaining weight no problem at all. I think you always focus on babies weight at this age so when someone tells you there’s an issue with a head measurement it throws a curveball.
Glad your son turned out ok! I thought I’d be more relaxed with baby no 2 but it’s the exact opposite!

Sorry I meant ‘wouldn’t’ say he looks out of proportion
