My 17 month old son has just started to talk to his finger...He points out his index finger and shouts at it. Anyone else's child do this? Should I worry?

Thanks :-)

I wouldn't worry, he's probably just finding out what he can do with his voice.

i expect it's just one of those toddler phases, but perhaps mention it to your health visitor if you're worried?

my dd does any number of strange things in the course of an average day, and she's nearly 19 months

thanks :-) I might mention it the next time I go...although he will probably have started to do something else by then :-)

My dd used to talk to her feet. One was good - called Lucy, the other was naughty -called Boggly. They used to have terrible fights with dd talking to and for both of them. It was really funny, but but she was deadly serious so we couldn't laugh!.
It didn;t occur to me to worry about it - and she grew out of it eventually.

Oh, seeker, my dsis and I used to do that! My right hand was "good Sue" and my left hand was "Bold Sue" ( We're Irish so bold=naughty) and my dsis had "Good Mandy" and "Bold Mandy". Used to keep us amused for hours!
My Mum did buy us toys, honest!

Seeker, my dds also used to talk to their feet. DD1's feet were called Twinkly & Joan and DD2's were called Poogly & Plank

Boco · 05/10/2007 21:03

You don't ever shout 'tell it to the hand' around him do you? Or watch too much jeremy kyle etc?

I used to talk to mine! I had a tiny mole that looked just like a little eye, and thought of my finger as a little creature with no legs....think I was a lot older than your son! So no, don't worry. Its sweet!

Chipmonkey - fascinating that your hands were good and naughty (love 'bold' - my lovely fil used that word!) just like dd's feet. And Pesto - poogly sounds a bit like my dd's boggly - maybe some deep toddler code! Lovely to hear about other people's experiences!

DD talks to my fingers. She calls them Mr fingers. She hugs them, kisses them and talks to them

Strange child.

As long as he's not repeating "redrum...redrum...redrum" in a gravelly voice I think it's probably fine.
