Hi, my toddler is 2 yrs and 3 months and he isn't talking yet. He can say mama and dada but that's it.
He understands everything I ask him to do and will carry out those actions.

Should I be worried??

I've seen these flash cards on amazon and thought they might help??

Does your child babble

It's difficult. I'd be quite reassured if he understands well but it doesnt necessarily mean there isn't an issue. Could he follow a 2 step command? Know any shapes or colours etc? Does he point to show interest? How about imitating? Even if he understands well I think I'd be getting him assessed by speech tx at this point. If he understands well I'm not sure flashcards are the best idea because his language understanding will already be at the point that this is way beyond him really and this might even bore and frustrate him. I think concentrating on 'back and forth' and imitation type games of any sort and lots of face to face interaction are probably more likely to help. A website called www.teachmetotalk.com explains the development of speech very well and gives ideas of how to help. I'd still be wanting him assessed by SLT by this age though. They might well say they think he'll catch up in his own but only an in depth assessment by professionals can really reach that conclusion xx

Our son is 22 months old and says 4-5 words and I have spoken to the doctor, you can get an appointment with a specialist at the age of 2.

This is just to check their hearing and for Autism. From what I have read, some are just very late with their speech and once it happens, they don't stop. Similar to you our child understands what you are telling him, he just can't tell you what he wants and results to pointing or making a high pitch noise.

Well I've just had a call today from SALT as I had put my sons name done about 6 weeks ago. He's having an initial face to face assessment in 2 weeks time. I'm nervous but also keen as hopefully they may just say he's good and will talk in his own time or if not they will help with a plan to get him talking.
