Hyperactive 13 month old?

I want to know if anyone else has a child like mine. He's a perfectly healthy, active, stimulated 1 year old. I'm always taking him out and about, playing with him, out for walks etc. He started walking at 11 months and is 'into everything' as they say. In cupboards, climbing everywhere etc and has started smacking people and throwing objects. To me this is pretty normal behaviour for his age as he's just exploring and learning. But whenever I am around certain people they comment on his behaviour and say he's naughty. 'My son was never like this' is a comment I had recently and 'why does he do that?' I'm getting pretty pissed of with these comments. As he's my first I don't know any different and although I do sometimes get frustrated with his behaviour, i manage it quite well as I know him & his next moves if that makes sense. I just want to know if anyone else's toddler is the same as people's comments make me second guess myself and start to wonder if it's normal or a sign that something is... wrong? I hate that people think he's naughty as in my eyes he's amazing. Im not sure how I'm supposed to Discipline a 1 year old who doesn't understand what I'm saying. Thnx

Is he big for his age or have a lot of words and people might think he’s older?

He sounds perfectly normal. I've felt judged by people too because my dd is a livewire, especially by my SIL who has a baby a similar age. She punishes her LG heavily for being the slightest bit boisterous. I am taking the softer approach of remove her from the situation if needed, explain that it's unacceptable, mirror kind gentle behaviour that I expect and if she's hurt someone encourage her to apologise. They're both 2 now. My LO has moments of minor aggression but on the whole is a joy and shows genuine empathy and will quickly apologise if she realises she's hurt someone and cuddle better etc. Their child will scowl and shout back at them.... because that's how she's learning you deal with these situations. Ignore the judgemental people. The only person you're going to have to answer to is your child in the end. I really wouldn't worry. Hold yourself to the same standards you expect of your child and you won't go far wrong. He sounds fine though. He's only a baby.x

My DS nearly 17 months has always been hyperactive but the good thing is, people that know DH mentions my DS is exactly like him. I get scared going around peoples houses because he is so destructive. My DH apparently was like my DS and now DH is a hardworking, proactive and intelligent man and successful in his business so this makes me feel much better about ds's behaviour. I can never do baby groups as DS is never interested in sitting there clapping along, he needs to be up and about exploring, climbing and throwing things. He is obsessed with stairs, doors, handles, buttons and he hides stuff in cupboards. The other day I spent ages looking for the TV remote and found it in the shoe cabinet.

@LouiseTrees he's actually quite petite but as he walks and talks maybe people do think he's older, but the comments were made by family members who know his age. X

@Jannt86 my SIL was actually one of the people making the comments. Her DS is a similar age but is completely different. He would happily stare at TV all day as never been stimulated enough IMO. My DS is very similar to DP in personality but according to MIL was never as destructive and slept well unlike DS 🙄 Nevermind eh! X

@takenbywine I know the feeling. I can't take him anywhere without him destroying something. Personally I don't think it's naughty behaviour but learning & being outgoing? Maybe I am mad haha. Just don't know how to respond to the negative comments. They have to remember he's my son & I'm not condoning the behaviour but he's 1 years old...

He really sounds fine. I would just keep your nose clean, parent him as you see fit and remind his family that he doesn't have to spend time with them if they think he's that awful. It's funny that the people who have judged my kid are the same people who ignore their kids and just expect them to sit in front of a tablet all day (so no wonder they aren't curious or interactive with their world) and they expect their kids to learn to be social and show people genuine empathy towards other people whilst screaming and shouting at them just for being kids. Incidentally they're the same type that spout all this 'be kind' crap whilst being the most spiteful, cold, obnoxious, callous I've ever come across as well. Honestly I wouldn't worry..... It sounds like you're doing great. There'll always be people who have opinions about your parenting. Do what is right for your kid not what placates the outsiders x

Thank you @Jannt86 xx

Yeh but they might forget momentarily given he’s so advanced in other areas.

@happymamaoverhere I get funny looks when I use a safety harness for my son as he just runs off into danger straight away and I'm tall as well and have a funny back after birth, so it's really difficult for me to bend down all the time to control him plus he doesn't hold hands anyway. But I heard that babies/toddlers like this is apparently a sign of high intelligence. I normally say to people who give me disapproving looks/comments that it's a sign of intelligence and they shut up lol and swallow their thoughts/comments

My little one is the same, he is 14 months old and is into everything. I have baby proofed the house but caught him today hanging from the oven door handle. He tries to climb everything and he doesn’t have an off button. To be honest I’m so glad I came across this thread as it’s nice to know I’m not alone.

littlebabymum · 03/09/2020 13:48

@Louisbeau they sound very similar!! (Sorry name change) x
