Is 2 too young for a scooter, or a pedall-less bike?

Am trying to think about 2nd birthday and xmas (same time) for ds, who is quite good at balancing but not v tall (86 cm I think). Would either of these (I mean a mini-3 wheeler scooter obviously, and a little puky or islabike without pedals) work? I don't want him to get something he's too little to be able to use yet!

My 2 and a half year old is getting a 3 wheeled scooter for xmas but she would have been able to manage it months before now

brimfull · 03/10/2007 10:41

my ds was riding 2 wheeled scooter at 2(he found it in garage)
Borrow one and see how he gets on.

Scooter better at this age than bike without pedals ime.

I am having the same problem cockles - ds is 2 in December so trying to think of some presents for birthday and xmas.

I would say the scooter might be a little old for a 2 year old to do. It takes quite alot of coordination.

We were thinking of some kinds of trike thing that has a push handle so that you can help them until they get the hang of cycling - or perhaps a ride on toy.

Toys r us have loads - this sort of thing...

www.toysrus.co.uk/category.aspx/truhome/trubikeswheeledgoods/trubikeswheeledgoodsrideonspedal?ref=tr uhome%2ftrubikeswheeledgoods&pageno=2 There are about 7 pages...

Just out of interest why do you buy puky stuff from - having a look at their website at the moment but there are no prices or stockists.

sweetheart · 03/10/2007 10:55

found it - they are very expensive!!!!

cockles · 03/10/2007 10:57

I googled Puky and a few online stockists came up - try that. I don't want to go the trike route esp not one with handles to push it, I think it would frustrate both of us especially me! He has an old trike with no pedals, but i think trikes are actually quite hard to move with pedals & they get moving more on a bike.
Good idea about trying a scooter - he certainly likes ogling them in the park!

We bought DD a running bike for her 2nd birthday and she started using it about 2 months later.

I bought it from e-bay - type in "running bike" and got it from a German manufacturer. It was about £30 and doesn't seem any different to the pricey ones.

sweetheart · 03/10/2007 11:42

ummmm, am actually now thinking this might be a good idea for my ds

Thanks cockles!!!

goingfor3 · 03/10/2007 11:44

Boots are selling a running bike and it's in the 3 for 2 offer. It's about £50 I think. We have German ebay one and dd likes it.

Scootergrrrl · 03/10/2007 11:45

DD had a running bike when she was 2 and she can now ride a proper bike at 3 and a half (proud mummy emoticon!) The balance bikes, as they'e also called, are ace as long as your DC can reach the floor.

Anna8888 · 03/10/2007 11:53

3-wheeled scooters are great at around 2. My daughter has a very sweet red and yellow metal one by Nordy (French brand).

At 3 they can have a two-wheeled scooter.

Smithagain · 03/10/2007 12:48

I think you would have to check his leg length if you are contemplating a pedal-less bike. We got one for DD1 when she was 2.75 and then discovered that her legs were still about an inch too short. But she is short for her age, so your DS might be OK.

I'm also not sure she would have been able to balance it at only just two - and her balance is pretty good overall.

My DD has been using a 3 wheeled scooter since she was 22mths and has absolutely no problem. Unlike the little boy next door who can't get the hang of it, but then he's better at pedalling than she is.

Like you I wanted a like-a-bike training bike for her 2nd birthday but my DD is quite tiny and the only brand that does them small enough is the most expensive - even 2nd hand on ebay they are costly, so I've binned that idea for now. I was thinking of getting the cheaper version for christmas when she'll be 2.5, but now that she's been using a proper bike with stabilisers I'm worried that she's not going to want to know. Oh indecision, indecision....

mimsum · 03/10/2007 23:35

dd had a puky learner bike when she was 2.5 - it was fab - it took her a couple of weeks to get the hang of it, then she took off

the good things about the puky compared with the like-a-bike and its ilk are that it looks more like a real bike and also it has a little platform where your dc can rest their feet rather than having them hang out the side all the time

dd graduated to a (crap) 14" inch bike when she was 3 and never used stabilisers [v proud mummy emoticon ] and she now has an absolutely fab isla bike which is so light and gorgeous and easy to ride that I wish they made them in adult sizes [sigh]

the only thing is they need to have their feet firmly on the floor with the puky etc as they need to feel really confident - if you're unsure about sizing, Isla at islabikes is very helpful and will be able to talk you through what would be most appropriate for your ds

cockles · 05/10/2007 13:24

i am really tempted by the Rothan now it is so grownup looking and lovely! The problem now is the cloth nappy which I am sure makes his leg length a good inch shorter. he will just have to ride with disposables on!

my dd has a trike which is fabulous and will "grow" with her but am wondering now if i should've just waited and got her a running bike.

the front wheel isn't fixed and at 23m she's too little to understand steering. even with the parent handle she's doing wheelies most of the time as i try to keep her in a straight line!

she's 2 in a couple of weeks and i am very tempted by a running bike or scooter but spent £60 on the trike that isn't used that often!

Smithagain · 05/10/2007 20:13

Paddlechick - Don't give up on the trike! We got DD1 a trike for her second birthday and a running bike when she was nearly 3. She used both of them loads. The trike taught her to pedal and the bike taught her to balance. When she came to trying a "proper" bike, it was a doddle. She never used stabilisers and taught herself to ride it in the space of one, very short afternoon.

And we used the trike loads as an alternative to the buggy. Once she could pedal and steer, she was very happy to ride it to town and back - much more fun than being strapped into the buggy.

Paddlechick666 · 05/10/2007 20:23

smithagain, thanks for that! gives me hope that the trike won't be wasted and that she can still enjoy a running bike when she's a bit older.

originally i did think running bike for around 3yrs.

i/we must practice more with the trike tbh then the steering would probably improve quite soon!

sweetheart · 14/10/2007 20:49

Cockles,

Thought I'd come back to this thread - I hope you see this!

We have ordered a runner bike from Next. It was £55 and it comes with peddles and stablerlisers and a handle too so you can help them out or add the peddles once they get old enough to ride the bike properly. The bike is made by Raleigh and is very good quality and it's at oso much cheeper than some of the more expensive types I have seen around.

Just thought I'd share our find!

tassisssss · 14/10/2007 20:52

scooters are great

ds got into his ages 2 year 3 months and it's still abig hit ages 4.5

sweetheart · 15/10/2007 11:37

bump for cockles if your around!!!

hoxtonchick · 15/10/2007 11:40

my dd has a puky & a micromini scooter, she's 2-and-a-bit & adores them both. she's quite tiny too.

Gobbledispook · 15/10/2007 11:43

We bought ds3 a scooter last year for Christmas - it was a 3 wheeler one. He was perfectly fine on it - he was just 2 then.

He's been riding a normal bike since then aswell (with stabilisers).

cockles · 17/10/2007 11:38

just wanted to say I did come back and check, and thanks everyone!
Still haven't decided yet, though... But there seem to be loads of wooden balance bikes around quite cheap (eg Boots) if anyone is considering them.
