4 month old - suddenly upset by family

Hi Everyone,

It’s be great to get some advice or hopefully some reassurance.

Last week our 4 month old was happy with his grandparents (and the odd new person).

This week - as soon as anyone other than myself or his mum (including the familiar grandparents) he becomes utterly inconsolable / terrified.

Ha anyone else experienced this?

Yes. It passed after a few times of seeing people again.

Thanks Louise. Any advice or do we just ride it out?

Ride it out sadly but do go comfort him and reassure him they are okay and touch his arm gently to say they are ok.

We had the same with my son from around that age, I remember being absolutely exasperated as we were constantly worrying about family coming to see him etc.. It does pass, but it took quite a while with ours, he still has elements of it now at 3 years old... I’d say it helps the more people you get to come round etc

Yes! My older DC wasn't like this and would happily be held by anyone so it was a bit of a shock for me with DC2, from about 4-5 months he would cry if anyone else held him and would even sometimes cry when strangers approached him in supermarkets etc. He's 17 months now and much better, he still wouldn't love to be picked up by a complete stranger but he was actually fine going to nursery after tears initially, formed a decent enough bond with his keyworker and is friendly to others. He still likes to keep his distance though!
