My DD is showing red flags for autism. Has just turned 2. Does not point or follow a point, barely responds to name, very poor eye contact, does not follow instructions like get your shoes, lines up toys constantly etc. After referral from GP and HV, she saw a paediatric nurse specialist for initial screening and nurse agreed there were definite red flags and referred for full assessment. There was a 6 month waiting list back in January and then Covid hit us so we are still months away from being seen. I feel absolutely overwhelmed with all of the information out there and worried that we are missing a window of opportunity to help. Can anyone recommend useful reading or ideas on improving receptive and expressive language? I really want to help DD communicate with us. She has a huge vocabulary of naming words, can count to 20, knows all her shapes and colours and the alphabet - and all of these in 2 languages. Knows loads and loads of songs and can fill in missing words in all her books. But if I say, come here/ bring your shoes/ get your jacket etc- she doesn't respond. Really want to do something instead of languishing on waiting list. Can anyone recommend some good resources with concrete strategies to help? The amount of info out there is huge and I don't know where to begin and what is reliable.
