Advice please on no bowel movement in 5 week old baby

Victoria72 · 28/09/2007 09:36

My son is just over 5 weeks old and has not had a bowel movement for over 24 hours - he normally has two a day. He is passing water but no movement yet - he seems to be struggling and experiencing some belly ache. Is there anything I can do/give him to 'start a new movement'? Any ideas suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks.

Is he bf or bottle fed?

Victoria72 · 28/09/2007 10:11

Bottle fed - quite a hungry baby.

Not sure about bottle-fed babes, sorry... I know that at this age it's common for bf babies to go a while without pooing.

Someone more knowledgable will be along soon.

We had this with our ff baby at one point. Doc said not to worry, it's quite common, as long as when the baby does go it's soft iyswim. HTH.

If i remember its orange juice (pure) mixed with warm water. Not very much of the oj mind. In a bottle or spoon feed.

elesbells · 28/09/2007 10:24

1/4 teaspoon of brown sugar in warm water should help

lizziemun · 28/09/2007 11:00

i was told just boiled water. and not to pur sugar or orange juice.

bubblagirl · 28/09/2007 11:07

i know they say no sugar but i used to put small amount of brown sugar as it kick starts if constipated not enough to damage

also i found rubbing small amount of vaseline around the bum helped stimulate and soften to make it easier had to do this alot with ds not pleasant but it helped him just get cotton wool put vaseline on and well i think you get the picture it does work

paddyclamp · 28/09/2007 18:45

Both my 2 went for over a week at that age! I massaged their stomach clockwise - that got them moving!

mysterymachine · 05/10/2007 22:44

Had similar probs with my ds - orange juice diluted with water and small amount of brown sugar. This didn't always help and ended up with lactulose as well but can't remember what age they can have that from. Was told it was normal as well.

hold his legs beneath his knees and push his knees into his tummy with quite firm pressure, do this quite a few times, then move both knees around in a clockwise motion. You can also rub his tummy with the palm of your hand in a clockwise motion. Try and find a baby yoga or baby massage class if you can, this will really help your bubba's digestion www.birthlight.com will list baby yoga teachers.

i used to have to put small amount of vaseline on my ds botom as it hurt when it came out hard he used to try and hold it in rub belly but also with cotton wool if you jst rub bottom it opens up and allows them to pass and makes it more comfortable having the vaseline it doesnt hurt them as much its not unusal for them to go once a day or every other day

i did find this worked great and did have to do this alot with my ds but found vaseline helped him and the rubbing of beely also the brown sugar in warm water helped things along although people say not to do that now my nan used that and my mum and they shared it with me lol

Hi, you could try soaking raisins in boiled water then leaving it to cool before giving to your baby. I also found that SMA gold bunged up my little one so swapped to aptimal - made a huge difference. Also they are not actually constipated unless the poos are rock solid. Young babies can go a long time between poos and strain and go bright red but if its soft then there proabably isn't a problem.
