6 months old doesn't sit or roll. When did yours started?

My son almost 6 months old, but he cannot sit. He sits with support, but without it he falls either backwards or on his sides in about 3 seconds or so. Also, he cannot roll over from back to tummy. He does roll from tummy to back. I've seen quite a few videos where 5 months old babies keep on rolling back-tummy, tummy-back all the time, non-stop.

First of all - should I be concerned about this?

Also, can you please share your experience and tell when your baby started sitting without support or rolling in any way they want?

Ds could sit unsupported from about 5.5 months (which is quite early) but he didn't roll back to front until after he turned 6 months and had only just learned to confidently roll front to back in the last couple of weeks and he is 8 months! They all do things at their own pace depending on their own incentives. I think ds was so slow to roll the easy way as he prefers being on his front so had no reason to put himself back on his back!

@Herkule babies sit (when the parents sit them up) at different ages, but they truly sit themselves when they start to crawl (about 7-8-9 months).

For rolling back to tummy, my one could not either and the physio showed me how to encourage. Lay him flat on his back. Sit by his right side. Hold a toy he really wants (I used my phone a few times. There.). Have him reach over for the toy with his left hand but has to be at his belly area, not high where his head/eyes are. He needs to reach across and down. To make him reach with his left hand, hold his right hand gently down. It's a trick, you can surely find youtube physio videos that show this better than I have described it.

In any case, they all learn by themselves at some point so I would not worry too much. Try not to compare him to other babies (hard, I know). Is he otherwise happy? Healthy? Smiley? Then all is well :)

It's so hard not to be concerned when you see pictures/videos of other babies doing things yours can't isn't it? I was exactly the same. LO was able to sit unsupported by 7.5 months but still would topple on occasion so I'd put cushions around him! He never bothered with rolling until after he started crawling and that wasn't until 11 months, all of which my health visitor informed me was completely normal 🙂

My 6.5 month old sits lovely, when plonked down lol, but he's only ever rolled twice at 4 months, he prefers the sky diving pose in tummy time and going backwards Hmm.

I think babies just do what gets the quickest results for them and some don't want to roll.

My DS was sitting unsupported around the 6 month mark and had been rolling for about a month before that . My best friend has a son the same age and he didn’t sit up or roll until closer to 9 months . However , both our babies started walking at 11 months . Those early milestones made no difference apparently.
