Hi I have a 27 month old, who doesn’t talk (not one word) I know what she wants (most of the time) and she points to things.
She had an appointment with speech & language in January and they signed her off and to keep an eye on her, well now is July and she’s still the same, so I have referred her back (just waiting on appointment) we have also been referred back to her paediatrician who today said he will transfer her over to the community paediatrician for mental development delay.
I’m just looking for other parents who may have had similar experiences with late speech, how has your child developed?

You've said that she has "been referred back to her Paediatrician who is referring to the Community Paediatrician".
Does that mean that your dd has concerns other than her speech ?
Only that will mean different replies. Only speech is different from global developmental delay or a speech delay or disorder as part of anther condition.

@BackforGood I’m not 100% sure to be honest at the moment. I’m just looking for late talker stories really and how they developed. X

I think the thing about late talking is it's really complex. I certainly know people who's kids barely said a thing at a similar age and then just came out with full sentences and caught up quick but obviously there could be more significant delays going on as well. It really does need to be taken in the context of the rest of his development. If he does have other delays in then chances are his development is going to pan out significantly differently from a child who has an isolated expressive language delay for example and these 2 different cases would need totally different interventions. It must be very frustrating waiting for the right services to provide support, especially in the current climate. I really hope you can get somewhere soon x

So there is speech delay and there is language delay - language delay is comprehension, understanding of words and communication 'mental development/special needs' some children like my DS have both, many children with autism have both. The fact that she is pointing is good, does she just point to what she wants or does she point to things that interest/excite her to show you? because the latter is called joint attention and its a crucial step in terms of language development -

if you look at the website teachmetotalk there is a checklist there (its free) of all the stages toddlers go through in learning to talk so you should be able to see what stage she is at and support her appropriately but a speech therapist who specialises in pre-schoolers would be good.

So my DS had no comprehension of language or communication at 2, he didn't point (joint attention pointing) until 2.5 and there was no overnight talking in sentences - there was a couple of very unclear words at 3, and his understanding was just as behind if not even more behind - the doctors were convinced it was classic autism, his speech therapist was a bit of a lone voice in saying it was speech and language delay but she was right and that was his eventual diagnose - at just turning 5 his speech is clear 99% of the time, it wasn't at 4 - at 4 he needed 1-1 support at nursery, his understanding is good but certain things are tricky - for instance him/her he gets wrong most of the time, but he is bright and doing well at main stream school - at two i was warned he might never learn to communicate or talk, sorry for the long reply :-) but pointing is very promising x

@Jannt86 @essexmum777
Thank you for your replies, She points to things on the tv or in her books to show me. Hopefully things will start moving now with speech therapist and paediatrician :) x
