How is your 10 month olds speech developing?

My DS is almost 10 months old and only saying the sounds mamama and mmm. He also screams and growls a lot! In his developmental check this was highlighted as something that needs monitoring so of course I'm questioning what I do to aid his communication! (We read 6 books a day to him, talk to him, repeat and make sounds). Anyone else experienced this?

My 27MO didn't really babble til nearly 12MO and even then it was funny sounds like she was under water. She did say oh oh at about 11MO though as well and had very good comprehension (able to point some things in books out and follow simple instructions by 10MO) and learned to point and clap and wave at around 9MO. She's basically caught up now and been speaking in sentences for a few months and is a little smarty pants. I'm not worried at all. The only thing you can really do and that I'd recommend doing is getting hearing checked. I personally think mine had a bit of glue ear at a crucial point in her infancy as her ears were always noted to be congested at hearing tests but hearing was always ok. Anyway I think just keep an eye on your LO and carry on doing what you're doing. Chances are it'll come. Unless he's obviously showing signs of global developmental delay I don't think anywhere will really be able to assess him reliably til he's much older. Any kind of screening for autism, for example, won't be accurate until 18MO as a bare minimum as so much can happen in this time. Over the next few months watch out for signs that he understands what you're saying to him and other signs that he's communicating with you and sharing interest eg copying you/waving etc and particularly let your HV know if no pointing by 18MO as this is quite an important marker for ASD. He sounds fine though tbh. My guess is he will develop his speech just fine but just do what you're doing and keep your eye out Smile

ITO speech just talk relentlessly to him ... like I mean comment on everything until you're driving yourself mad, and lots of face to face time with him where you talk and give him chance to talk back and even playing back and forth games with him will help. Avoid the temptation to keep asking him to name things as he may well just resist it. I found a website called www.teachmetotalk.com seful for giving tips on how to help x

My little boy was the same. He barely babbled at 10 months, started then kept stopping.
By the age of 12 months he had one word.
15 months I think he had 4 words.
He’s just turned 2 and now talks in 3/4 word sentences. He is constantly chatting to us.

He started to understand instructions by about 15 months.

It’s tough op, but he’s still very young. I would say just keep doing what you’re doing. Try not to worry to much.
