By the way, if DS2 stays awake for more than two and half hours, he can get completely hysterical and will cry loads and will take ages to go to sleep. The idea is to try to 'predict' when he will be tired and put him down before he becomes overtired.

Some people have recommended the baby whisperer book, it is very good I think.

What the author suggests is that you write a 'diary' of your baby's sleep time and feeding time , and see if there is a 'patern' so that you can predict what they will want next.

In my experience (limited, mother of two) if a baby is crying loads and he is fed and changed, sleep is the next problem down the list. You can put him in his cot and leave him for a minute or two, he might just settle down and fall asleep. Sometimes they just get worked up and overstimulated and need to be left alone, not for long though, I'm not talking about control crying just a bit of 'time out'.

** with both my boys, the sound of appliances such as a washing machine, tumble dryer, even hair dryer helps settled them down if they are crying. I know, it's silly but it really calms them down!

thanks spb, ds was born on 13th so he'd be 24 weeks today? If we were talking about dd i'd have known instantly how many weeks she was

Ah yes I thought he was one of the Friday the 13th ones!

ooh eddas, I've got one of those Friday the 13th ones - 24 weeks today. I'm not saying 6m, though - makes him sound too grown-up

My DD is 5 mo also. She usually naps from 9 - 9.30/9.45, then 12 to 2/2.30 and depending on how well she slept at lunchtime may have another 30-45 mins around 4.30. She definitely starts getting tired when she has been up for a couple of hours. Tell tale signs are pulling her ears, rubbing her eyes or generally being stroppy.
She is nearly always in bed asleep by 7pm, and then wakes for one nappy change and a small feed most nights around 3/4am. Some nights she does go all the way through to 7am, but not consistently.
btw - she is exclusively breastfed.
