The past week or so all my toddler has done is lie. It'll range from little things to big worrying things but I can always tell that he's lying because he says it with a smirk. Today he has said a cupboard closed on its own, that the builder stole my purse, that I scratched him on a scratch he's had for a while. I've told him off and sent in to the naughty step every time. I'm just so worried he's going to go to nursery and say I've been hitting him or something. It's really stressing me out and when I ask him about it he is so dismissive and says he can't stop does anyone have any advice

that is a really nice link @sleepismysupport

In my family we have a large collection of fibs told by children over the years- including my grandmother (born in the 1890s) whose imaginary friend was responsible for all wrongdoings, my niece who claimed her cousins had been eaten by lions, and my son who claimed his sister had come home from school and done a poo in his trousers. His sister wasn't any better at that age: she was adamant it was her then 8 month old little brother who had written the letters of the alphabet on the dining room carpet in felt tip pen.

The good news is that all these children have since grown up into responsible and honest citizens. It was a phase. It passed.
