Teething madness - (when) does it end???

ds is 24weeks and it's been going on for the past 3m.

We've had the snotty nose, the nappy rash, the persistent ear-pulling, the drooling. The biting everything. (Except anything cold. )

Now we also have throwing his head wildly side-to-side, preferably with my knuckle in his mouth, and interrupted naps (hard to sleep when trying to suck fingers/pull ear).

And while he's settled down to 1 feed a night he's awake 2-3 further times with his teeth - eyes shut, frustrated cries as he finger sucks/rubs ear.

Paracetamol gets spat out, only half a dose at a time goes in I reckon.

There is still no sign of a frellin' tooth - and there are how many more of these suckers to go???

my twins 'teethed' from 6 months i think (they were prem so took a while to get going), but we didn't see a tooth until 17 months!

Have u tried bonjela? or the teething powders ashton and summut i think? I've heard they are good. bonjela numbs the gums and my two would pass out about 2 mins after having it rubbed on their gums.....also with the snotty nose have you tried elevating one end of his cot mattress and using karvol plugs in's?

and if you suspect severe pain, then i found nurofen was quicker to work than paracetamol....

phdlife · 26/09/2007 11:57

can't detect any difference with the gel or the powders (but then they are homeopathic anyway I think).

have used a sudafed plug-in which is good.

he's just... so... CRABBY all the time, it's wearing me out atm, that's all

oh and he's screeching the house down from the other room.

phdlife · 26/09/2007 11:59

and all his toys are making him absolutely screeching furious within 2-3mins. dunno if that's a teething thing tho.

Ashtons and parsons is the way forward and medised for when it gets really tough he should be over teething by about 18mths (ish) I'd take him out for a walk to the chemist you sound like you could do with a break.

phdlife · 26/09/2007 12:10

pretty sure, he doesn't seem unwell, IYKWIM -no temp, runny nose is clear, just crabby. and it's both ears.

and if I just sit next to him (occasionally separating him from whichever toy is driving him mad), he's Mr Happy Chirpy Sunny Beans. Especially if I let him chew on me.

oh dear

sometimes I think you and I have the same baby....

mine does actually have 2 teeth now and has cheered up a bit in the day, but his sleeping has never gone back to what it was. I found baby nurofen a bit better; takes the inflammation down (and has a syringe thing to shoot it right to the back of the mouth). PLus the Ashton and Parsons powders and stacks of BOnjela

phdlife · 26/09/2007 15:20

yes MrsJC I am watching your ds verrrrry closely, so I know what I'll be doing 2m later...

My DS did this as well. On one of these occasions, we did put it down to teething and it wasn't until about 3 days later, we decided to take him to GP and the poor LO had a 'raging' ear infection. No obvious signs, like constant pulling, temp or anything. Just didn't like water anywhere near his face although this wasn't unusual because he has never liked water on his face but used to get very upset in bath.

Just a thought that it might be ear infection on top of teething!

phdlife · 26/09/2007 16:07

okay mishy, well if they can do stealth infections I might take him along to the surgery and get them to have a look. wouldn't wish an ear infection on anyone.

OP posts:
mishymoo · 26/09/2007 16:11

Good luck - really hope it's not an ear infection - poor LO.

phdlife · 26/09/2007 16:13

yes me too.

after throwing all those wobblies this morning, he has now been sleeping for 2.75 hrs... wonder if he is ill?

OP posts:
mishymoo · 26/09/2007 16:18

Make that appt. even if it is just to put your mind at rest!

phdlife · 26/09/2007 20:16

okay Mishy, I took him in - dr had 0.5sec look in both ears and said they were clear. Dunno if that makes me feel better, exactly.

My DS is similar age and has 2 teeth- although he's not as obviously distressed as your DS, he is much more restless, frustrated with toys, very quick to grizzle and cry and generally not the happy baby he was a few weeks ago- I think it's teething too. I have also found Neurofen works better than Calpol and that Nelsons teething granules are better than A&P's. Some friends have suggested that it's quite a normal development stage (to become so frustrated) not sure what people think?

pampam · 26/09/2007 21:29

over by 18 months? My dd only has 4 teeth and she's almost 17 months old, are they all going to come at once? I hope not!
i'm not looking forward to the teething getting going at all....

phdlife · 26/09/2007 21:41

hm, that's interesting - you mean this is another thing I have to keep saying "it's just a phase" for?

OP posts:
TheJen · 26/09/2007 22:14

my other favourite phrase is ...all things will pass!

MrsJohnCusack · 26/09/2007 22:58

oh yes took mine to have his ears checked too - and no dice. Absolutely fine

it is a phase. A bloody annoying one

jellybelly25 · 27/09/2007 10:44

Is happening here too. I had been blaming teething for weeks and had written it off as no sign of a tooth but i really think it is now after reading this thread.

Also horrible red eczema type rash due to colossal amount of drool all over chin/chest. Chew chew chew, waking up when previously sleeping through etc.

Do any of yours SHOUT about things? Not always upset just loud loud shouting and squealing?

MrsJohnCusack · 27/09/2007 11:00

oh yes jellybelly

patches of eczema here too from all the drool (Him, not me, although the way things are going that could change...)

sometimes he bellows too, just shouts, especially if I am not looking at him, I am not allowed to look away. And he's developing a fine repertoire of screeches and squeals (he and DD egg each other on and copy each other which is cute, but very, very noisy)

I have to say, he's been much better since the 2nd tooth made it through the gum. Still waking at night, but much easier to feed and settle, and will go back in the cot instead of insisting on sleeping on me. And much cheerier in the day. So there is hope!

TheJen · 27/09/2007 11:13

Praise the Lord for Mumsnet! My DS is doing exactly the same and sometimes feel he's just shouting for the sake of it! Almost like he doesn't really know he's doing it! If I mimic his shouting/crying back he sometimes giggles and it makesme feel better to release some shouts! Re dribble- have you tried plastic backed big between t shirt and vest to protect skin? just a thought

jellybelly25 · 27/09/2007 12:58

good idea to put it in between jen i will do that!

Lol @ mrsjc re drool!

out of interest, do you guys give teethy stuff/calpol etc when they wake at night or before bed?

anecdote: just left dd on mat with towel for some bare bum time while i made my lunch, came back in after about 2 mins and she had migrated about six foot to otherside of room (rolling/wriggling/flying??) and weed all over her nice activity mat thing. i never learn this lesson...

jellybelly25 · 27/09/2007 12:59

re shouting, dd2 did this in a cafe other day, ppl looking at us with the 'aww how cute' look soon stopped when shey realised she was not getting any quieter... i was also trying to bf at the time so she was attracting lots of attention to my bare nipple which dd1 found hilarious. yay
