10mth old not reaching milestones. CP?

Hi. My 10 month old boy is very delayed and not reaching milestones. He can roll onto his front but doesn't do it often and only started this at 7 months. He isn't able to sit and therefore is nowhere near crawling/pulling himself up etc.

I'm pretty sure he has cerebral palsy and this is being investigated but I guess I'm looking for any hope I can get. Is there still time for him to sit? At what point do I accept he never will? Is there anyone here with a baby who couldn't do these things at 10 months but now can?

I should add he was a healthy baby at birth, born full term, no problems with the pregnancy so this has been a real shock.

Thank you xx

I don't have any experience but do you mind if I sit quietly in the corner for this thread please? I have concerns about my 5 month old for different reasons but I do too think it to be CP. Her muscle tone is all over the place and she has/had seizure like (to me) episodes since about 5 days old. She's had one EEG which had a suspicious but non diagnostic spike on it and we are waiting for a retest. She also hasn't had a normal blood test since birth either. Her calcium has been consistently high, started to come down but has shot up again.

It's all such a worry.

My DS is similar and also 10 months. He can sit for short periods but loses his balance, usually falling backwards. Can your DS sit at all? I kept hoping he would just get the hang of it but not really getting any better at it. He only started rolling back to front just before 9 months, and has since started to do a very slow army crawl. He can put weight through his legs but mostly stands on his toes and has no balance at all. We don't really have any risk factors for CP but I'm starting to think that might be the issue. What tests is your son having?

@anotherwinkywinkybumbum
Of course! Hopefully you find a useful answer here. I agree, it is such a worry. I'm really struggling with it and finding it hard to 'wait and see'. My boy had blood taken but we are still waiting on results. His MRI came back fine but apparently this doesn't rule out CP.

@Cdl84
Hi. No, not really. He is sitting much better now with support - it seems as long as the bottom of his back is supported he is ok but he doesn't seem to be getting any better with sitting independently. He just pushes back or falls back, never forward which is what I was expecting to happen. He hated tummy time as a small baby so I blamed this for the delays but now I think it must be more. Same here, no risk factors that I'm aware of but everything seems to point to CP (not just the motor delays).
He had an MRI which came back fine and we are waiting for results from genetic tests.

Cdl84 · 29/06/2020 08:31

Gemedin, do you mind me asking what other factors point towards CP other than motor delays. I also have some other concerns about my DS development other than gross motor too. He had some limited genetic testing at 4 months old which was normal but wasn't comprehensive. I havent sought any advice yet as I've been burying my head in the sand a bit I think.

Gemedin · 29/06/2020 09:44

@Cdl84
So probably one of the main things is that from birth he always seemed to favour his left side. I never knew this was a problem and naively thought 'oh he's going to be left handed!' He does use his right hand now a lot more than before but it is definitely weaker - to be honest his coordination in general is not very good. He also tends to keep his right hand in a clenched fist - he used to do it with both but less with the left now. To me there's just something 'not right' with his movements. He doesn't seem to be doing anything that I expected him to.
What about you?

Cdl84 · 29/06/2020 11:40

My DS didn't start trying to grasp things until 5.5 months although he does this well now and seems to use both sides of his body. He seems a bit behind on communication also (doesnt respond to any commands, doesnt mimic but does babble). Development has always seemed slow and I've always though I'm being paranoid but not being able to sit well at this age is definitely abnormal. It is worrying isn't it. Have you been referred for any physio or had any advice on how to help with sitting?

Gemedin · 29/06/2020 12:10

@Cdl84
My boy babbles but that's it, no mimicking or anything like that. Like you said, development has just always seemed slow. My niece is now 4 months and looking back my son was nowhere near the stage she is at when he was her age. I'm noticing more and more how behind he is. I also thought it was just me being paranoid, thought I shouldn't be comparing him and he would get there in his own time but I couldn't ignore the not sitting for any longer.
Yeah we have been referred for physio but haven't heard anything yet - the doctor told me last week they would chase this up. I found a private physio who I've contacted but also still waiting to hear from. I've been trying to do things myself but kind of stuck now, don't seem to be getting anywhere with it so I'm hoping physio helps!

I'm aware this thread is now quite old, but I was wondering if there was any update on the babies whose development was discussed here. I am in a similar position with my 7 month old and desperately looking for answers. Thanks

Littlesoul123 · 12/01/2023 01:51

How is your baby

Gingerninjas9 · 12/01/2023 04:58

Hi,

My little boy has confirmed hypotonia (or low muscle tone.) He had genetic testing done, though we ate still waiting for some results, but they did show his ck enzyme level was normal so ruled out and muscular dystrophy disorders. He is still not making 'normal' progress but has come on so much since j posted. He now can hold up his head and roll from side to side. He grabs toys and holds his bottle and spoon yo feed it is a long road but hopefully this can reassure anyone in a similar position that it isn't always worst case scenario x

Mumof3bb1 · 06/07/2024 15:14

@Cdl84 hi how did your little one come on, did he start babbling and using gestures?

Cdl84 · 07/07/2024 11:21

Hi,
He's now nearly 5 yo and is a normal little boy. He did take longer than most to meet milestones but made a lot of progress quickly from 18 months onwards and jist didn't get going before then. Wish I hadn't worried so much at the time but I know that is easier said than done. I hope everything turns out well for you too.

Mumof3bb1 · 07/07/2024 11:36

Hi @Cdl84 amazing! I love hearing the positive outcomes.

So my son is going to be 10 months on the 13th he was born 3 weeks early, he sits well unsupported and will reach for toys but HATES being on his tummy, he just pulls himself back into sitting, has just learnt how to crawl and can pull to stand with ease, struggles to sit back down though, just stays standing until we get him back down.

he is not babbling like the other babies, makes occasional noises and screams but no babbles Ma, baba or dada.

His eye contact is okay ish, doesn’t copy us or clap, wave or point. EVERYTHING goes straight into his mouth, wants to lick and bite everything.

Sleeps and eats well, I feed him I can’t deal with the BLW mess🙈

He will bang his hand on table if I do it, and can bang two objects together.

I feel like a terrible mother and im at the very end of the rope. We read together, sing, babble, all day long.

when I make the mama movement with my mouth with no sound he copies that movement with his mouth but no sounds if that makes sense.

Smiles when he sees me/husband or other family members, can lift arms to be picked up and will use me to pull to stand up.

I find he twirls his arms/feet occasionally and kicks legs really fast when lying down, and stares at the door handles and lamp in my room.

I am at the end of my tether, HV seems to think I have health anxiety.

He has no separation anxiety and I feel he stares into blank spaces at times.

will smile if I say smile, and looks at where I point at times, 70% will look when I call his name, if he isn’t engrossed in something.

Will watch me do the actions to heads shoulders, knees and toes but can’t mimic any songs or actions.

my main concern is lack of babbling and the no gestures!

Sorry for the long post!
