My toddlers weight - is this really anything to worry about?

I had a appt with HV today as we've moved to a new area and my DD was weighed today at 31 lb 11oz

HV didnt mention the weight, just asked if she ate anything excessively (which i dont believe she does). She also commented that she was 'a little on the large side'.

She has always been above average on both height and weight, and is definately solid - but i didnt think that weight was considered a problem this young????

Cant find the growth chart and wondered what the 'norm' is for this age?

If she's taller than average, she is going to weigh more than average. Why not plot her weight against her true height on the weight charts and go by that measure instead?

My DD (11 months) is off the baby charts in height and weight, she's actually the size of an 18 month old (and the weight too).

Hang on I'll find the weight chart online for you.

All the charts btw are a bit odd because they count height and weight independently, but this one, contains links to a BMI indicator which might be better for you

Thank you for that link.

Im really worried now though. Her height is showing just above average. Weight is off the scale.

Overweight according to BMI.

Not sure what i should do though - she eats balanced diet - has loads of energy and is on the go all day. She does have crisps and sweets on occassions, but not excessively at all.

She only ever drinks water.

Maybe she will have a growth spurt and it will even out????

Maybe - instead of looking at food - look at exercise. How old is she - does she have an hour's vigorous scampering every day?

My ds was huge as a toddler and although he was a good eater, he didn't eat lots of crap. HV told me to put him on a diet, I walked out and ignored her advice, he's now a teen and as skinny as a rake.
Unless you are feeding her maccy d's every day for dinner, topped off with biscuits, sweets and crisps, I wouldn't worry too much. I know a great many teens who were above the average toddler weight but who have slimmed down as they've grown outwards.

Also how overweight are we talking - if you are talking one or two points that's not actually that bad, over three and yes, she does need to do something.

whomovedmychocolate · 25/09/2007 20:23

Oh and thank you lulu I got there in the end (even with my s key stuck down!

I think as long as she has a healthy diet and lots of opportunity to run about then don't worry. Some toddlers are more sturdy than others!

I personally don't believe toddlers need crisps and sweets - except as very occasional treats such as birthday parties(but that's just me) but if she does have them make sure it's not daily. They do add quite a lot of empty calories. Having said that I REALLY don't believe toddlers need diets!
