My 2 yr old is scared of the wind?

My DC is about to turn 2 and over the last couple of months she has developed a sort of fear of windy weather. If it's windy she will need to wear a hat or her hood up and she keeps very upset and stressed if she feels either seems like it's moving/blowing off. She won't play outside if it's windy and if it's very very windy she gets properly distressed and will cling on to me and bury her face into me and cry and want to go straight back in. This morning she started walking to nursery and it was a bit windy and after about a 1/4 of the way there she was getting very upset about it and decided she wanted to go back in the pram with her dummy for comfort. She will sit in the pram with her hands clamping her hood or hat on her head.

I'm autistic and also struggle with wind for sensory reasons although not as bad as she does, it only bothers me if it's really windy which it was not today for example. Has anyone elses child been like this? I'm assuming she will grow out of it but bit concerned with me being autistic and having sensory processing issues. I'm not sure if she is like this at nursery or not but will ask them.

Hi, did you find out any more about this? My nearly 3 year old has developed a fear of the wind. She screams hysterically if we walk from the front door to the car if it’s windy and clamps her hands over her ears.

nursery told me today that she got extremely upset when playing outside today and needed to go back in. I asked them if it was unusual and she said although their garden is a bit of a wind trap, she’s never seen a child react like that before.

i am also autistic, my son is autistic and so it would not surprise me if she is also autistic. But I can’t see many other signs in her other than she is very shy. My son was clearly autistic from being a young baby.

Hello, my DC is now 5 and has outgrown this. I'd say even by the age of 3 she had pretty much outgrown it, it was gradual. She still doesn't like it if the wind is reaaaally bad, but then who does, really?! She remains particularly sensitive etc but nowhere near as much as she was as a toddler. For example she likes loud parties now although she will often wear ear defenders still for comfort. She hasn't been diagnosed with anything, nursery had no concerns and school don't either.

Many children hate hand dryers at that age, so it would make sense that the wind could fall into the same category. A lot of noise and disturbance with no visible cause can be confusing/distressing. Ditto thunder.
