Speech in 2.5 yr old

My DS has his 2.5 yr check up today. Childminder asked if I was going to say anything about his speech, for example 'car' comes out as 'har'. DS has had lots of ear infections but has been better over the summer and on a reduced dairy diet. DS is our only child and so I have no comparison as to whether he has major problem or not. Amongst his friends his speech is not as good but he can make him self understood at home if he needs something. DS starts nursery in January and childminder thought staff may have difficulty understanding him.

What do you think?

Thanks gf. Yes a good idea to get on the waiting list just in case.

My dd1 had slow speech and bad pronunciation caused by terrible glue ear. However, she never had ear infections and it was only picked up when she had to have her adenoids and tonsils out aged 2.5 because they were affecting her breathing and they had a look at her ears while she was under. The ENT man who did her op said the glue ear would have made her partially deaf. She had grommits put in and her speech improved dramatically.

I would be persistent with this one if you think there's a problem - I felt bad that I'd never mentioned my dd1's speech to anyone so it could have been sorted out earlier .

BTW, did you get my CAT re meet-up in Windsor? DK if that's too far for you but it would be lovely to meet you . See the E Berks thread for details.

Good luck with the appt.

Thanks stickynote. DS has regular checks with ENT specialist and probably needs his huge tonsils and adenoids out but waiting to see how he is this winter.

Yes I got your message about meeting up. I'm thinking about it because I quite like the anonymity of MN but would also like to meet up with some other mums in the area...

isnt it quite common for kids to not pronounce things properly?

my ds still pronounces things wrong, i thought it was normal, he is 3

stickynote · 12/10/2004 11:07

There's a difference, snmum. We used to joke that my dd1 was fluent in Chinese because all the intonation was there but her pronunciation of all words was very unclear. Obviously no kids have perfect pronunciation at this age but there was a significant difference between dd1 and her peers.

Strawberry, I know what you mean but I decided that I could always change my name if the meet-up went horribly wrong .

snmum · 12/10/2004 11:12

stickynote, just ignore me. My daughter has got major speech and language problems and I just get completely paranoid about my ds when i read these threads!

slinks off in embarassment

stickynote · 12/10/2004 11:15

Oh snmum, don't do that! The problem with my dd1 was that I had this niggling feeling that something wasn't as it should be, but everyone said "oh, they're all different, she's fine, she'll catch up" etc etc, so I did nothing and still feel bad about it now .

strawberry, how did your ds get on?
