Gassy baby and swapping from breast to formula at 2 weeks old

Hi everyone, so we have decided to switch from exclusively breastfeeding to formula now that my baby is 2 weeks old, even getting to the 2 weeks was hard and my mental health has taken a beating to get here. However the change hasn't gone as well as we hoped, i used to just feed on demand and she would fall back asleep, our baby now seems gassy all the time and needs alot of extra attention, last night we couldnt settle her at her 7pm feeding for nearly 4 hours and I ended up brestfeeding her to go to sleep.
She seems to be getting too much air when she is feeding from the bottle, we are following all the guidelines for positioning of both her and the bottle and also stopping and burping her at every ounce. Her gas seems to be very painful and she is screaming and twisting in pain, she was on aptimel formula and we have changed to cow and gate today and also bought the anti colic tommee tippee bottle.
Does anyone have any experience of swapping a baby from breast to bottle and is this uncomfortable gas a normal side effect? Should it resolve itself in time? Any advice on how I can help my baby? We are at our wits end! :(

Hiya,

I’m sorry that you and baby are going through this. It’s horrible when they are in pain and you can’t stop it!

My LO went to the bottle at around three weeks and we had the same problem.

Infacol was the answer for us! Make sure you use it every feed, and remember that it takes a few days to kick in so don’t give up if you don’t see results straight away!

I also burped baby by sitting him in on my knee, holding his head up with hands on shoulders and moving his top half around in a big circle. I could be patting him for ages, nothing. Three rounds of the circle, burping for England

Hope this helps!

I should clarify, I meant my hands were on his shoulders to steady him, I’m not folding his hands into weird positions on his own shoulders 😂

@Eggcellent29 thanks so much for the reccomendations and also the tip on burping, we will give both a try, it's so hard seeing them in pain, hopefully we can get past this

Burping is so so so so important. Keep baby upright on your chest, head on your shoulder and rub her back up and down, small swipes left to right , gently tap her back with your finger as if your were playing the piano, walk while you do it and walk around. It is a 10 min minimum process . You need to find what works for her.

You’re welcome, I remember how horrible it was!! He would never burp with the ‘traditional’ methods. Now we all have a good giggle at all the strange things I do to make him burp 😂

It will pass. We still use the infacol (expensive but worth it) and he is very rarely bothered by wind. But if you’d told me that a few weeks ago I would have laughed and then probably cried 🥴
