Hi my ds was 2 on Tues and we have decided to try to convert his cotbed into a bed tommorrow. I think he is ready he keeps banging himself on the bars and waking him up. Was wondering if anyone had any tips. Wasn't sure whether to follow the usual bedtime routine we have and then just put him in bed or change the routine to 'big up' being in the big boy bed and see if it works any better. Would love some advice TIA

Follow the same routine but think ahead! Tell him that he is in his Big Boys Bed and if he stays in bed ALL NIGHT he will get a treat. That may stop him from night time wanderings now that he can!!!

Do you have a bed guard to stop him falling out? If not, put a duvet on the floor and move furniture away from the drop zone... so if he does fall out of bed he will have a soft landing and will not bump his head on any corners.

Good Luck

Yes have a bed guard etc and the room is safe with no sharp corners as it is what Iuse at nap time for work (I am a childminder) so I dont have any worries there it is just I really don't like the idea of waking up at 3 in the morning to see ds standing there staring at me!!

Put him in to bed yourself, in the same way you did before, DD1 22 months is in big bed and she never gets out of bed after I have put her in, but does when she'd climbed in herself. In the morning, she calls "mummy.....stuck"

we moved ds (21 months) 3 weeks ago due to baby no 2 being due and moving bedrooms. I went for it full monty...quilt not grobag no bedgaurd or gate on door....thought i would try it then buy these things if proved necessary.

I didnt mention anything about 'staying in bed' as i didnt want to put the thought in his head that he could get out. He's a bit younger though so that might make a difference.

So far so good no probs goes to bed just as before...he is a good sleeper though so i guess it depends. i did put cot mattress on floor for a week in case he fell out in night...he didnt so i toook it away when he promptly fell out! He didnt even wake up though!

We kept same routine just bed not cot though.

I have had trouble with lunchtime naps though and him not settling down for those. Did the return to bed thing at the weekend and that worked after about 10 goes.

We have always put a stairgate across the door at the same time as putting the bed in. Stops any coming in and out/ downstairs, and they can get up and play in the morning. They've never objected!
