Discovering a learning problem at 6 yrs old

Hello!

Ive been a member on her for years and i never come on here.
Since the lockdown has been on though, i have obviously had my son at home with me and the school have sent work for us to do.

A few months ago his teacher mentioned to me his concentration was a problem in class. We spoke to the doctor about a hearing test, they saw him and said no need. He has a sight test and now has glasses to help with concentration work like looking at the board etc.

Since having him here with me it has become apparent just how bad his concentration is. He does not sit still, he is always playing around with something in his hands, he doesnt focus for longer than about 30 seconds before he starts talk about something totally unrelated, or gets up, or starts day dreaming. He is just not listening to a word I'm saying.
Im not exactly einstien so i have to sit with him and go through things in my head and think about the best way to explain things to him.
I can ask him a question and he just looks at me like he has no idea what im saying. I asked about 4 times for him to pick his toys off the floor before bed tonight and each time he went to do it he got distracted by something else.
Im sure some of this lockdown is effecting him of course but its just such hard work to get him to focus on anything! I feel like pulling my hair out. Then i feel like its my fault that im not a good enough teacher for him because i cant find a way to make it fun enough for him to pay attention.

Anyway what i really wanted to know is does anyone here have any experience with noticing learning difficulties in their children.
Any insight would be a great help.
Thank you

If the Teacher has mentioned it, did they suggest any sort of assessment?

It might be worth emailing them and asking if you can have a chat about his concentration and seeing what they suggest.

The teacher mentioned his concentration was a problem in class thats all. I have emailed her and said its also a problem during home learning and i have concerns that there may be an underlying proble. She said she would mention it to the SENCO but theres not an awful lot that can be done during lockdown.
He needs to be assessed i think

If school aren't doing much, I think bod be tempted to speak to your GP and see if they will refer him Smile

Hi First Post on here.
Looking for some reassurance.
My 16 week old has began laughing as he falls asleep, sometimes just a laugh once or twice a giggle. Just want to know if this is common among other babies as all I can find is gelastic seizures and its scaring me to death. Thank you

Jaim23 · 16/05/2020 13:56

Sorry if I've jumped on someone's post here never used it before apologies

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/05/2020 17:57

@Jaim23 I think it's probably best if you start your own thread, if you need to know how to do that, just ask Smile

Jaim23 · 16/05/2020 18:19

I certainly do need to make my own. I couldn't delete it once I realised I had put this on someone else's question. How do I create thread? My apologies again. @JiltedJohnsJulie

Ok any other probs? Is concentration a bad overall or just on school work? I know a lot of parents are finding it hard to get the children to concentrate but the fact you say you had concerns makes it sound like it could be an issue. How is his reading/writing/ maths? May well be worth discussing thisngs with GP. My parents started having concearns at this age. 9or younger.) It took a couple more years for me to get my diagnoses and the correct help. TRust your instincts.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/05/2020 18:35

No need to apologise @Jaim23 everybody is new at some point Smile

Are you on the app?

Jaim23 · 16/05/2020 18:42

@jiltedjohnsjulie, Hi I've just gone through the Web page. Is there an app I can download instead? Thank you.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/05/2020 18:45

There is an app but you can use either Smile

If you look at the Behaviour Section, which we're in, there should be something towards the top right that says "start a new thread".

Jaim23 · 17/05/2020 17:29

Thank you so much, I've done it I think

mummuddlingthrough81 · 17/05/2020 18:15

@june2007 his writing is messy and he doesn't stay on the lines, he hates writing and much prefers maths but doesnt ever concentrate or sit long long enough to do any. Hates reading too, gets his d's b's and p's muddled up when reading and writing too
