AIBU to ask when your little one started taking?

My son turns two next week and the only word he says is mum! He started trying to say some words a little while ago but now all we get is babble! I feel at the moment like he will never speak or that there could be an underlying issue. I spoke to the health visitor a couple of months ago in the phone and explained this and she said he is behind on speech and recommended some books for him but he doesn't seem to want to even look at them no matter how much I try. Just wondering what age other people's children started talking, I've heard boys can be behind girls - his cousin (a girl) is 2 months older and says so much so it does make me worry.. I know I shouldn't compare but can't help it! Confused

Agree that you shouldn't compare, but it's hard sometimes isn't it?

Whilst his speech could be within the realms of normal, it might be worth doing this Progress Checker just to make sure.

If it suggests that he needs a little bit of support, you can self refer fir a hearing test and Speech & Language Therapy in most areas.

Sorry I meant talking*

Thank you , I have filled it in and it's said to refer, my help visitor mentioned referring after our follow up call so maybe I'll ask her about this and try to get him referred sooner rather than later. I do feel with him it could be an attention disorder. Yes so hard not to compare , a few people have told me their child didn't speak till they were 3 but I feel they're just trying to make me feel better.

Sounds like it's a good idea to see if the HV has already referred and if not, either ask her to do it or do it yourself.

Having a hearing test is important too so that hearing difficulties have been ruled out before the SLT sessions start Smile
