Dd2 has been roughing counting for a few months now, i'm just wondering if she is unusal for her age. My dd1 was about 3 when she learnt to count.

TIA

at wulfric,

I know exactly what you mean. For the longest time we had problems with ds and binomial theorum. It sounds odd, but he just could not grasp it!

But now that we have instituted a nightly program of mathematics and music, I think we have cracked it.

Ds suddenly started reciting his numbers from one to ten at age 20 months. No idea where it came from, hadn't mentioned anything beyond three AFAIK. I don't think he had an actual theory of number at that age. But nursery workers and other parents who overheard him were a bit taken aback so I assume it is unusual (although not unheard of, judging from posts further down the thread).

Wulfric, does you or your dp work with my dh? I've had to get him to promise to teach ds decimal counting BEORE binary or hexadecimal.

Not that he has taught ds counting, they are to busy playing cricket. DS is 18m/o.

One of the rare entries in ds's baby book (being a pfb he actually had one) states he could count objects reliably to 3 at 18 months and higher less reliably e.g. 1-2-3-7-8-10. It's probably in there because someone commented on it at the time so it could be slightly earlier than usual, or it might just be that he didn't say very much else, so it was noteworthy. I do remember a friend being impressed by his duck counting abilities at the park once, but can't remember whether that was then or when he was older. He's gone on to be a bit of a maths whizz and has always been quite interested in numbers for what it's worth, so it's possible the OP has a mathematician on her hands, but probably too early to tell.

DD was about 20 months when she learnt to recite the numbers 1 to 20, although always missing of 15 for some reason. This was because our lift was out of order so we used to count the stairs in 10s and 20s for the 12 weeks they were broken. She began to understand what the numbers actually mean - i.e. actually counting out 2 or 3 items, etc. working her way up to 10 sometime after turning 2 I believe.

Friend's little girl is 2y3m and she can actually count objects up to about 6 or 7 now, but can recite numbers above 10.
