sticking tongue out in 8 week old baby

suddenly started last night..sticking tongue out gently after feed ...not in a strong purposeful manner as in playful type - but kinda slow and soft with rounded mouth...and a bit weird...

maybe related to heartburn/wind - but happening all of a sudden- anyone else experience this?

Almost definitely wind , all mine used to do it alot , dd2 has a particularly long one

sputnik · 14/09/2007 22:25

My LO does nothing but

bumbly · 14/09/2007 22:28

yeah wind i think too

but what is odd is that whereas before he used to just open mouth and let air out with tongue flat insied ..all of a sudden the tongue is now coming out gently as he slowly opens mouth

why?

probably because he can, believe me it gets worse when they're 6 and they're still sticking it out at every opportunity They cahnge all the time as they develop new 'tricks' all the different functions devlop at different rates and often when they discover a new thing that they can do they do it a lot, wait till he dicovers how to use scraming for attention...... Enjoy for now, if this is the only worry you've got...I take it you a first time mum?

sputnik · 14/09/2007 22:34

Because he can?

dd2 now 4 mo used to do this all the time between 6-10 weeks, I thought it was so cute, she would even do it to copy one of us doing it, now she won't do it and I miss it!

She used to do little clicks with her tonigue too, now she just laughs at us when we click at her

Bellyhangingover · 15/09/2007 11:02

bumbly, babys tongue isnt white is it? My DD used to do this and it turned out to be undetected thrush.

Not to alarm u, as i think baby would have been sticking tongue out earlier than 8 weeks if it was thrush. But the thread title just caught my eye!

Hope it's just that ur little one is advanced!!!

bumbly · 15/09/2007 11:51

yeah little clicks too

and...it is white...but i think it is milk reflux white rather than thrush white...will investigate properly now...thanks for tipoff!!

just concerned a bit as tongue sticking out coincided with a strefful few days for little one - so was hoping it is just him learning he has a tongue rtaher than anything else untowards...

They develop a tongue reflex, which would enable them to push out foreign bodies so may be a reaction to wind or pressure, and which disappears by around 6 months as they gain more control so that they can start to take solids. Gradually they start to be able to pick up toys and mouth them as part of their exploration of the world, the mouth being a particularly sensitive area atm.

harpsichordcarrier · 15/09/2007 18:03

newborn babies are capable of pushing out their tongues purposefully, for example to copy. it is probably just experimentation

yep. there is a famous bit of film where a newborn baby (i.e. withint the first half an hour of birth) copying his mum and dad
it's very sweet

bumbly · 16/09/2007 10:22

HI All,

thanks...

yes he has been copying me with tongue for a while but this new tongue movement was more slow and probably wind related....just a bit lifeless and hanging out

anyway finding it hard to check for thrush as he fidgets a lot

i can only see pale white milky white deposit at back of tongue which oddly seems to be there all the time...but then again he has reflux

how do i differentiate from thrush?
