Silent reflux?

So my little boy is 5 weeks old and we have been struggling massively with him.
his symptoms are as follows;

  • nasal congestion from time to time
  • noisy / horsed breathing from time to time
  • fussing / crying in pain during/after feeds
  • arching back / turning head during feeds
  • excessive crying at more at night / sometimes during the day
  • hiccups
  • choking through feeds
  • sounds of gulping after feeds / during day
  • ocassional spit up
  • doesn't like lying down prefers falling asleep on us (side lying or tummy time or being sat up right)
  • sudden crying

We are first time parents so aren't experienced at all. I'm wondering do these signs sound like silent reflux and does anyone with more experience have advice. It breaks my heart to hear his painful crying and I am beyond exhausted, its having a major effect on my mental health.

we had tried infacol and gripe water- neither working for him ( we originally thought it might be colic as he is grey around lips but he burps well )

thank you in advance

Hello, my DD has silent reflux and I hope for you it isn't! Have you had a diagnosis from gp or hv? My lo had some of the symptoms you describe such as the funny cough, hiccups, arching back, didn't like to lie down and would wail for hours. She would wake up screaming in pain. Sadly time is the best healer, she's 9 months old and on medication which she couldn't have when she was tiny. This is what helped a bit in the early days:
I put a folded blanket under the mattress to elevate it so she wasn't lying flat (the mattress was flat, but raised at the head of the bed if than makes sense!)
I am bf and I cut out all dairy from my diet as cows milk protein could be a cause of silent reflux. This took a couple of weeks to kick in, but it did help! If you are using formula talk to your HV about ones which don't have cows milk in them.
Buy a sling!!! It's a life saver, made walks and naps so much easier! I use a connecta, but there's loads.
When your ds is older talk to your gp about medication - DD was on baby gaviscon which was only a temporary relief but now she is on omeprazole, and much better. She is eating solids now, still off dairy and I have to watch what I give her and at what time of day, as some foods cause her reflux to flare up and aren't ideal at supper.

Let us know how you get on! Smile

Like you I thought it was colic, tried infacol and I had a horrendous day during lockdown that he would not stop crying. It seemed to make it worse. My DS had many symptoms your LO has. He got infant gaviscone. It has reduced pain but he still regurgitates quite a bit. We have a next to me crib that tilts which helps but he used to slide down to bottom under covers. I found lying him on a baby moov and using a sleeping bag helped with that. During the day he naps in his pram with mattress tilted up. Worth calling the doc for a telephone consultation. Good luck.
