trouser problem whilst potty training

My ds is in the throws of potty training- he is 28months. He is coping well with it all so long as he is just wearing pants and a t-shirt. As soon as he puts trousers on its like his mind goes blank and forgets what he is supposed to do. We are having countless accidents every day. He has stopped saying when he needs to go to the toilet If he isn't wearing trousers we are fine- no accidents he just takes himself off to his potty. I am beginning to get a tad frustrated now - I know I shouldn't.
Has this happened to anybody else or does anybody have any advice. I'm not quite sure where to go from here.

I know this one so well. I started about the same time with my DS and it all went very wrong. Some advised me to persevere and others said don't push him. I opted for the second choice.

I tried again 2 months later and same again and then I tried another 2 months later and hey presto. I know it means leaving it a bit buts its so much less stress for him and you. Boys generally are slower than girls and I kept comparing him to my DD who basically did it all herself.

What does he wear at night, a proper nappy or pull up. Top tip that helped him get dry was once he was dry during the day I put pull ups on him at night and said they were big boys pants (they either had Buzz or spiderman on them!) This seemed to help him think he only had pants on and was barely wet from the start.

Coincidence or not I'm not sure but it worked for me.

Good Luck

Thanks. He is in a nappy for night time however last night he told me he needed a wee a few minutes after he had his nappy put on. We made it to the potty no problem. he can do it if he really thinks about it!
We shall see how he got on at nursery!

A good nursery should help you with whatever regime you choose. I can remember my little man really struggling with not wearing a nappy during the day and a couple of times he did small trickle in his pants. Not even enough to go thru to his trousers and the playgroup he was at bottled it and stuck a nappy back on.

Pulled out the paperwork they gave me about the protocol of supporting parents and encouraging the children. Asked to meet with the Manager and well i never, bending over backwards to help me, after that meeting !

You and he need the support so dont be afraid to ask for it.

Keep me posted.

Have a good weekend

Just a thought, if he managed it tonight(well done little man) Have you thought about a star chart or reward system to praise him?

When I was first potty training ds I went and bought a whole pile of tracksuit bottoms for ds as he found them much easier to pull down. Normally I'm not keen on them as he's very skinny and they just hang strangely on him, but he really struggled with the stiffer elastic on the waist of proper trousers.

Agree they dont look particularly smart but really do help them get over that initial panick of not being able to help themselves.
Even when he is at home there is no harm in letting him walk around in pants and t shirt if it helps him get in the zone.
Have you got pants that feature a special character from the tv or such like ?

UniSarah · 15/09/2007 12:02

have you tried shorts or trews with out pants?

dimitri · 15/09/2007 18:47

I have been out and bought several pairs of cheap tracksuit bottoms which he is permenantly living in at the moment.( thank you ASDA) He also has a star chart however the novelty of it appears to have worn off a bit.
I have no complaints about the nursery and they are keen to let things carry on and go at his pace.
To be fair to my ds he has been pretty good today - maybe we are turning a corner!! I did think it was too good to be true with him cracking the potty training fairly quickly.
I will wait and see if he can repeat things tomorrow.!!!

Hi
I have similar with my ds at moment. He is 28 months. He is spot on without anything on his bum at all. But as soon as I put just a pair of pants on him he seems to forget he needs to use the potty. Have bought him some character pants and keep reminding him but still forgets.
