2 year old hardly speaks

Hi all,
My son is 2 next week and hardly speaks. I mean he speaks fluent gibberish but hardly says any recognisable words. He can say mumma (rarely) dada (rarely) Na (meaning no) wow and car. Apart from that he doesn't say anything. Should I be worried or is this normal??

According to guidelines, he should have a lot more words than that. Around 50 is considered 'normal'.

Don't panic yet though. What is his understanding like? I was told that comprehension of what is being said to him is far more important than being able to say the words.

My son was a late talker. Only had around ten words age two, and preferred not to use them - he got by with grunts and pointing most of the time. By 2.5 he was on the verge of being sent for speech therapy. Then one day he just started talking more and more.

He is 4.5 now and never shuts up is an extremely chatty little guy with an excellent vocabulary and very clear speech.

He is far from unusual, and being a late talker definitely does not have to mean something is wrong.

50-100 words tends to be expected around 2YR old, however speech delays are also very common at this age and tend to resolve by themselves. If he has good understating (able to follow simple instructions) and is able communicating his needs/interests using gestures (like pointing) then it is not concerning.

@HalfBearOtherHalfCat @AladdinMum
Hi thanks for your replies,his understanding is very good he understands when I say instructions. He point to the sink when he wants a drink and points to the bread when he's hungry I know I'm meant to have a 2 year check (I think) but I haven't been contacted as of yet by the health visitor. Who would I ring to get into contact with them?
