My 2 year old’s behaviours

I’m a little concerned about my little girl’s behaviour. She just turned 2, two weeks ago and I know about terrible Twos and all that but it’s been going on for quite a while now.

She had a tendency to hit, especially myself, luckily not other kids. She doesn’t listen and when I do tell her off, she starts cracking up and I have no idea why. I use the most serious tone of voice and I let her know it’s not funny. But she laughs and I don’t know how to discipline her in those kind of situations.
She screams at the top of her lungs out of the blue, for no reason. Throws the most dramatic tantrums, especially if you tell her no.
She doesn’t talk much yet, she says a couple of words and lets you know if she’s hungry/thirsty etc

My daughter is my first child and I’m honestly so confused to what I’m doing wrong.

Any suggestions to things I could try would be great :)

If you're worried about her speech, have a look at the Talking Point website. They have a 2 year progress checker, tips on how to encourage speech, and what to do if she needs more help.

The hitting is totally unacceptable though. Have a read of these tips from Dr Sears.

If she's not listening, not talking much and randomly screaming, have you had her hearing checked? Your HV can refer you for a hearing check or in sone areas you may be able to self refer.

Tantrum king is pretty normal though. What do you do when she tantrums now?

It’s not her speech I’m worried about as such, it’s mostly the hitting.

Her hearing was checked at birth but not since but I’ll take it up with my GP

I normally ignore her tantrums, she will stop after 2-5 minutes or so

I know that you might not be worried about her speech but her lack of speech could lead to frustration on her part, which in turn could lead to hitting and tantrums. It’s definitely worth doing the progress checker on Talking Point.

Was the link on hitting if any use?

There’s no need really to make an appointment with your GP to ask for a referral to audiology, your HV can do this for you or you may be able to ask for the hearing test yourself.

Ignoring the tantrums is usually a good idea. If you want some tips on managing her behaviour, the No Cry Discipline Solution is a good book.

That does make a lot of sense actually, yes the link on hitting was very useful, thank you :) I’ll definitely enquire about the hearing test though.

I appreciate your help :)
