19 month old speech

My 19 month old DS can say about 30 words (although only I can understand a lot of them!), however they are all very similar as he has a limited range of consonant sounds - B, M, G, P, Y and SH. He can’t say “daddy” or “dog” for example as he can’t make the D sound yet. Is this normal at his age? I know they are all different but my friends’ children who are the same age have a much wider range of letter sounds. Thanks.

My 22MO had a similar vocab at 19months and also was quite limited in the sounds she was making. She now says at least 100 words (kindof stopped counting tbh. Might even be nearer 200 now) and is stringing things together all the time into 2 and 3 word sentences and occasionally even more. I don't think pronunciation is too important at this age. A lot of my LO's only I would know what she's saying and she's mixing consonants up etc (eg baby is 'daydee' and she calls her dummy a 'nana' and I have no idea where she got that from lol) As long as it's a noise that they consistently link with something then it counts. I think as a general rule about 50% of their speech should be understandable by age 2-2.5. If he's talking and you have no other concerns (eg he's pointing, socialising well etc) then I'd just keep talking to him and interacting with him and give him til he's 2 and if he hasn't caught up a bit then speak to your HV at his age 2 check

These images may help, I took a photo of these when in my sons speech and language session as I thought they were interesting (at 2 he had less than 10 words and hardly any sounds)

There is quite a big window for those sounds, 16-26mths, so I don't think you need to overly worry at this stage. We have been told by speech therapy to keep the language you use with LO simple and when they say something model the correct way of saying the word e.g if they say "og!" when pointing at a dog reply with "yes that's right! Dog!", don't say "no it's not og, it's dog" (I know that sounds obvious!)

If you are on Instagram then I recommend following peachy_speech who is a brilliant speech therapist. x

Sorry you can't zoom on those images very well, try these instead, hopefully it will be easier to read!

Sounds normal to me. My DD is 20m and she went from only a few words at 16 months to probs about 100-150 now, and occasionally will string two words together (but only certain ones e.g. bye bye mummy). She also can't say lots of the letter sounds, so most of the time I'm the only one who can understand her!

I was told that once they have about 50 words they will then start to try to put more than one word together
