ds is nearly one and i just give him water. Obviously he is OK with this as he has had not altertive on offer but recently he has had some of his sister's fruit squash from a glass and loves it! Is it OK to give it to him in his beaker?

Mind you RE teeth, ds1 had almost all his out at 5 as a result of formula (soya, he couldn't bf and couldn't tolerate dairy either)

fillyjonk · 01/09/2007 17:07

oh high juice is fine really. I mean, I wouldn't actually go to far to drink it, but its probably fine

no agree, its the crap aimed at children that bugs me. Value + squash NOT a good combination

its funny peachy, in the first 12 weeks (where are you now?) I cannot STAND pure water either, I have to have a dash of something in it. Its very odd, am not sure what I'd do in the wild. Shrivel up, I expect.

My DD1 lives on milk, pure fruit juice .... and squash. I could never ever get her to drink water. Except once when she'd been very ill and puking for two days.

If your DS is happy with water I would stick to that on the whole, but you don't want him to feel he's missing out and his sister gets all the 'treats'. If he's approaching one the odd small drink will do no harm. Anything in moderation I say. Am probably a bit slack, but hey.

Mever

handlemecarefully · 01/09/2007 19:48

Oh Christ - whenever you like. As long as it is not every day (got to watch those teeth)

And agree with dumbledoresgirl - never buy reduced sugar or 'lite' variety

handlemecarefully · 01/09/2007 19:51

lol, I do think it's a rather sad affectation however to be obsessed about sugar - particularly when I think of the rank hypocrisy that generally accompanies it

emj23 · 01/09/2007 19:52

I'd go with the diluted fruit juice or flavoured water suggestions. Keep him drinking water as much as possible too though, it's really good that he likes it.

handlemecarefully · 01/09/2007 19:57

I agree emj23 - stick with the water as far as possible

massivebigpantsface · 01/09/2007 20:00

I dont plan to give dd squash at all - when I was a kid it gave me a tight chest (the colourings I believe). Apart from that it tastes disgusting, nothing like real fruit juice, why bother with something that has any crap in it at all. I will give her water and if the time comes that that won't do then fresh juice watered down will be far better.

LaCerbiatta · 01/09/2007 20:02

Why is aspartame so horrible?
Honest question, I'm quite good when it comes to food and reasonably well informed (would never give dd squash ir even drink it myself by the way), but I thought aspartame is just 2 aminoacids... why is it bad?

LaCerbiatta · 01/09/2007 20:04

Ok, have just found this. Should have looked before I asked!

snowkitten · 01/09/2007 22:27

tuga - surely our lo's would have to be drinking huge quantites of aspartame for it to cause those symptoms . either that or a permanent saline infusion .
I know that water/fruit juice etc is best but just wondered what harm would be caused by squash drinks. my 9 yo dd always drinks squash and so do i . Should she stop???

nappyneeds · 01/09/2007 22:33

my sil prefers to give her children hi-juice type squash drinks rather than squash (that has aspartame in it). She says she prefers them to have a drink with a little sugar in it than one with aspartame. They choose to be very careful with diet as cancer runs heavily in their family.

Loshad · 01/09/2007 22:35

why would you want to?
(sorry haven't read all posts)

TheQueenOfQuotes · 01/09/2007 22:38

If he's happy with water - don't bother.

Both my DS's have had it (squash that is) from quite early on (can't remember exact ages) as they would NOT drink water (DS1 now does drink it but only because his friends at school do!).

I suspect DS3 will be the same - he's bottle fed and I've tried repeatedly to give him some bottled water to see if he's thirsty rather than hungry (especially in the hot weather) as he still feeds so often, but he won't touch it..

TheQueenOfQuotes · 01/09/2007 22:40

"why bother with something that has any crap in it at all."

ermm perhaps some people don't use proper fruit juice as it's too expensive?

Flibbertyjibbet · 01/09/2007 22:42

If we are out and ds's are offered squash/juice etc then they can have it, especially if other children are around so they don't feel they are missing out.
If they ask for it at home I just say 'we don't have any juice here' which they seem to accept most of the time.

superalienstitch · 01/09/2007 22:43

dc are 10, 6 and 4. they are never given squash. if they are thisty, they drink water. if they want juice, then they have proper juice.
there is absolutely no reason on earth to giveyour dc flavoured, coloured, sugared, e factor filled artificial stuff.
they do unfortunately get the stuff at parties andother peoples houses, but if i insist on living in england! its a very british thing i have found.

superalienstitch · 01/09/2007 22:45

qoq, yes, proper fruit juice is very expensive. but there is still no reason to give them crap. in this country we are very lucky to have pure clean drinking water coming out of our taps! (yes, i know there are some areas whre it tastes foul, but on the whole, th euk is very lucky

nappyneeds · 01/09/2007 22:45

my own dd is 11 months and just has water. I used to get comments from others when my ds was younger when they saw he only had water - they kept insisting he'd want something with it. I think water is best and if its the main drink at the moment youre on the right track.
