Concerned with pointing am i over exaggerating?

My daughter is 20 months and does point at things like people on tv, things in books and random things. She can also say words around 38 give or take the odd word she’s said once or twice. She has also started putting two words together like ‘peppa pig’ she’s said ‘go away’ ‘hello mummy’ ‘hello daddy’ ‘uh oh’ and says ‘doggie’ which is two syllables so thought I’d throw that out there.. More to the point of this post so she does point yes but she doesn’t point at items she wants like for example if she wants a bottle she won’t point to it she’ll just grab for it as most of the time it’s in her reach but last night she was getting upset and I did everything to try and calm her down but the last thing I thought was maybe she’s thirsty so I got her a drink and turns out it was that but she didn’t get me up or lead me to the kitchen or point at the kitchen for a milk? Is this me being over the top worrying or should she by now pointing at or leading me to what she wants? It was at night just before bed so I don’t know if I’m being ridiculous also she has taken me to the kitchen before for a snack but she didn’t point to the snack I just knew she wanted one..

My DD didn't really point but it turned out she simply couldn't see very well. If either of you wear glasses, it might be worth getting her eyes checked.

At 20 months though I would expect one of mine to say, sign or point to something they wanted. It might be worth doing the m-chat and seeing what her risk of autism is Smile

It may be perfectly fine but I'd do the m-chat test and maybe talk to your HV about it. Does she use the words functionally? (As in to express a joint interest in something or to request something) Also ITO joining words as a milestone it has to be a functional joining of words (eg; 'want milk' or 'pig there') so peppa pig wouldn't really count as it's about having the skill to start to combine words to make a sentence and have a meaning in its own right if that makes sense. Not really sure about your other examples but I suspect these have been learned as a single phrase too. It's really hard to gauge from a small post what (if any) issues there are and development is so complicated that you're probably best talking to a professional if worried xx

I'm presuming her eyesight isn't the problem if she's pointing out things on the TV but it's worth checking. My boys almost 21 months and tbh he did point several months ago, around 11 or 12 months I think? Now he asks for things, but I think your daughter's speech is pretty normal, I certainly wouldn't be concerned, I honestly don't know much about autism or other special needs but I would have expected a child with those issues to be more behind in other aspects of development whereas your daughter sounds normal to me. I honestly think it's nothing to worry about, they all do things differently at this age

Yes just to add none of what you're saying sounds massively concerning. She's probably saying about what my dd said at that age and she's literally exploding with her language about a month later. Coming out with several new words and phrases I didn't know she had in her most days. When I was concerned about my LO's speech I told myself I'd wait til she was 2 before seriously persuing speech tx since she was otherwise fine/ahead. I don't particularly like this 'watch and wait' approach but I think as long as you're doing what you can to help them talk and they're not massively delayed with other skills then there's probably not too much can/will be done before age 2 to really help and most DO catch up in this time x
