2yo not interested in crayons etc

As the title suggests, I try to get him to make a few lines etc but he's not interested. Guess I'm just anxious so that when he starts school he knows how to hold a pen etc

Should I worry or is there plenty time yet?

Only crayons, or all drawing stuff? My DD is 3, still not a fan of crayons. She doesn’t much like coloured pencils either. In both cases, yo have to press quite hard, which means you have less control. But she LOVES her whiteboard easel. She also likes felt tips. For a treat, we have some paint pens too.

Crayons are better because they’ll develop more strength etc, and they are of course much cheaper. Depends what your goal is. Do you just want to get him interested in mark making? Then try something easier to make marks with.

At two, my son wasn't remotely interested either. He only liked active things - running, digging in sand, scooter, trampoline etc. I took him to a birthday party at that age, and all the other little kids were diligently sitting at the coloring table making nice pictures or putting sprinkles on cupcakes at the cake decorating table and he was the one who refused to sit down and went galloping around with a balloon cackling to himself Blush

He's four now, and still not a fan of crayons (too hard to make a really good satisfying mark with I think). Leave a pen lying around and he'll draw some pretty good pictures of the cat on the dining room wall though Hmm He is getting to the point where he can cackhandedly form his numbers and write his name, which isn't bad for the manic child who doesn't like to sit down. Especially as he hasn't started full time school yet (they start at 5 here). So try not to worry too much yet!

Something he did quite enjoy was aqua doodle (water painting mat) so that could be something to consider?

My kids liked Magna Doodles and Aqua pads as their first drawing medium. They only used crayons at school or in restaurants

At 2 my son wouldn't touch anything like that. It was making him upset even trying. In the end I decided to leave it and wait until he started school. The teacher was mildly surprised at first but his writing was probably better than some of the others after a short while as he didn't have any bad habits to unlearn.

I just used the time to do other things with him.

My 2.7 year old isn't that into drawing with crayons or pencils, but does love to draw in the sand or mud with a stick. My understanding is that what matters far more is building up strength in their shoulders, arms and hands so that they have the muscular control to hold a pen properly when they are a little older, as well as fine motor skills. So Duplo, stickers, threading beads on strings, Play-Do, etc are all good pre-writing/drawing activities.
