20mth Climbing out of car seat

Hi does anyone have any solutions to my problem, my 20mth old boy has started to climb out of his car seat harness no matter how hard we pull the harness tight. This has started to be a real pain on journeys as we are constantly stopping to put him back in. I have written to Britax the makers of the seat and all they says is not to tie the harness together as it breaks the law and it may be bordem in the car and to play Ispy with the child. Should be fun with a 20mth old!
Any suggestions would be greatful

in the perfectly happy people catalogue? you can get a special clip that attaches onto the shoulder straps and stops them doing this, it is easy for an adult to undo but not a child, so is safe in an accident etc, i think it is less than a fiver and i have friends that have used it for their children.

i also have a friend who had the same problem and decided that as the car seat wasnt fulfilling the reason she purchsed it she took it back, had a huge rant in mothercare where she bought it and they eventually relented and gave her her money back

good luck xx

I guess this is what 3madboys means.

I have to say I don't like the idea of using accessories with carseats as they are tested without accoessories. BUT whats safer a comercial product or a child that is noght in a carseat....

I have a lock tite and it stops them being able to slip the straps off their shoulders. They have been tested in the USA but not over here.

Safety wise the manufactureres aren't going to "permit" you to adapt their seats. The devcies which fix the straps together tend not to be recommended in UK but you have to assess the chances of a delayed rescue with the risk of injury due to them not being properly strapped in .

Ds1 went through a phase of doing this, I used to pull over, strap him back in and really shout at him, much more than I normally do. Had a few unpleasant car journies when he started screaming but he only did it four or five times. The Toddler Taming book implies that this is one situation where it might be justifiable to smack your children, but I'm glad that I didn't have to. Didn't know about the straps, they must be much safer than having a toddler climb out.

my cosin does this and i was shocked as he has the same car seat as my dd he pulls his arms out so that his upper body is free of the straps! my dd has started to do this in the pushchair i am hoping she doesnt as it scares me to daeth the thought of what could happen!

It is scary to think that while I am driving and watching what he is doing I could have a crash and then he would be injured due to the strps not being on I think I may look into getting one of the straps to link the harness together, which I feel is safer that he is in the carseat than not at all. Thanks for everyones comments.

I would suggest the houdini stop

www.houdinistop.co.uk

It has been crash tested as well as approved by the ACRI as safe.

It clips on dead easy, you can do it with one hand

It doesnt move up or down without any real force

Our youngest was always pulling his arms out but this totally did the trick.

We feel much happier and more comfortable driving now knowing the he is fastened in securely and not with his arms out all over the place.
