my 5 month old is breast fed and has never had a bottle. I wouldlike to start her on a cup for occasional drinks of water. My book recommends starting on one without a lid - do mumsnetters ahve any recommendations for what type and where from?

doidy cup is good.

Get one from your HV or ask her where

I'd say that's a bit too young - to test, give her an empty cup to see how much control she has.

5 months does sound too young for a cup, let alone a cup without lid.

She may get on Ok, friends daughter did just that at that sort of age, she started with a dolls tea cup in teh bath copying her sister.
Start with a small ammount in teh cup, exect a mess and don;t be suprised if she enjoys chewing the cup more than drinking. At her age its only an added extra not a nessesity, she will get all the fluid she needs from Breast milk if you let her feed when she wants for as long as she wants.
A doidy cup Can be good as its slanted so she won;t have to tip her head back so far. I did start boy with one, but swiftly found a lidded cup more practical for most times and the doidy good for when hes in teh high chair and I can supervise and replenish when needed as he still only has a litle at a time in it or pours it straight down him.
