Head Control

Hi all :)

I'm a first time mum and have a beatiful baby girl who is now 15 weeks old :) She is a very smiley content baby who sleeps and feeds well. She giggles from time to time and chews her hands and slowly grabbing on to toys as well.

However she is soo lazy physically I think. She hates tummy time :( I try and do it everyday and she does lift her head up but gets tired quickly and doesn't enjoy it so she'll either drop her head and do aeroplane arms to escape - aeroplane arms is a new thing she's learned 🙄 When we hold her she normally looks to the right and lifts her head but is quite floppy and weak and we have to support her. When I hold her in a sitting position her face facing outwards and put the tv on she'll lift her head and look forward instead of right and watch the tv for some time before she drops her head forward. Also when I pull her by her arms to a sitting position she doesn't seem to have a head lag but as soon as she sits up she wants to look to the side again and will look at me from time to time but struggles to keep her head up in that position.

Health Visitor said baby's heads are heavy and that they expect them to be able to control their heads by 6 months. However I know some other babies who are able to control their heads and backs and roll over by 3 months.. My daughter still hasn't rolled over either.

Did anyone else have concerns over their baby's head control and when did it improve? Any advice will be much appreciated.

15 weeks is tiny. Head control milestone is 6 months I think so you still have plenty of time yet!

Mizydoscape thank you for replying. I know I might be worrying over nothing but wanted to find out if anyone else had similar concerns and whether it improved and when it improved.

My friend had a little one who’s head control was slow to come about, I think he was fully ok by 6 months so hit the milestone just about. He’s also just started waking (16 months) so think he just likes taking his time. Don’t worry too much!

Dreamland13 thank you 😊 I feel like my daughter's head control has improved over the last week 😊 She's now able to keep her head up for longer and midline when in a sitting position. However she's now refusing to do tummy time 😩 She's learned to just put her head down and cry until we pick her up 🙈 She's not using her arms and hands to push up.. I know all children develop in their own time but I just want her to reach the milestones in the average time frame for my own sanity as I'm a paranoid first time mum. I'm scared she won't crawl or roll on time because she can't do tummy time properly.

I was the same first time round! Just remember some babies don’t even roll, some just sit up, some don’t crawl, just bum shuffle, so don’t drive yourself mad waiting for things to happen. My second is 6 months old, she wasn’t a fan of tummy time eventually gave it few minutes at a time but grizzled, she can roll back to front (cries when she gets stuck) has just learnt front to back but isn’t perfect, that all happened 5-6 months. Try and enjoy your time and just know she will get there xx

Dreamland13 thanks for reassuring me 🙏🏻 fingers crossed she improves like your wee one 💖

Hi all 😊 Just wanted to update my post just in case anyone else is in a similar situation and ask a new question. My daughter is now just over 4 months and her head control has improved significantly since my first post 😊 However she refused tummy time for a while and has started trying it again the last week. She can lift up her head but is only pushing up on her right hand. She's not trying to use her left hand to push up no matter what I do.. Is this normal? Will she eventually learn to use the other hand too when pushing up?

She uses both hands equally for other things like hitting toys, grabbing toys, chews both hands and can escape both arms when we swaddle her at night.

Also she can now roll from her back to her side but won't roll on to her tummy unless we push her slightly.

Anyone with similar babies please respond.

@Yazeee
Hi, how did you get on with your little 1? Any updates? I am in similiar situation with mine x

Yazeee · 29/11/2021 10:28

@10187Mummyof2 my little one is now 27 months old and she’s the most active little girl :) Her language skills for her age is very very good too :) I wish I worried less when she was a little baby… I caused myself so much stress and anxiety over literally the smallest things :( Enjoy your baby please :)
