Hypermobile 1 year old, frustrated and not weight bearing or standing

I'm wondering if anyone has had similar experiences with this:

My daughter is nearly 1 years old and my attention has been drawn to the fact that she might have issues with her joints and muscles and could be what they call 'hypermobile'.

She is barely crawling (1 or 2 paces), she can move her legs almost 180 degrees on the floor, she shoots her arms straight back behind her when I pick her up and she is growing more and more frustrated when on the floor. The main concern is that she has never done any weight bearing on her legs. She can't stand at all, even when aided and encouraged by us. She just collapses down into her knees and ankles when we try and get her to put weight on her feet.

I've booked an appointment with the doctor who I hope will shed some light on the matter but I would love to hear if anyone has had similar experiences and could share some advice.

Thank you

Yes! I have a 13.5 month old. He is now cruising and bearing weight. However, he wasn't bearing weight until two weeks before his first birthday. (He did start crawling at 9 months though thankfully).

He has been seeing a physiotherapist since one month old because he was born with torticollis, and it was she who realised he is hypermobile in his hips and ankles. She's pretty pleased with his progress though Nd discharged him a few weeks ago, though we have to call her if he's not walking by 18 months.

When he wasn't bearing weight at all, I admit I was pretty worried. The physio showed us some exercises to do with him. Getting him kneeling was a major step, so I had him sitting on my lap with an activity table a lot to encourage him to kneel forwards or try to bear weight. Another was getting him to climb the stairs which he is an expert at , but this only came after he had learned to crawl. Now that he's cruising I've stopped worrying and know he will get it in his own time but I can see your concerns.

I would push the doctor to refer your daughter to physio. What did the HV say st her 10 month questionnaire anyway?

@surreygirl1987 thank you so much this is really helpful. We didn't actually have a 10 month questionnaire but we've got the 1 year one next week so I will discuss with that with them as well. I am definitely going to push the doctor to refer her to a physio, good tip! An activity table is a good idea too.

I'm glad your son is now weight bearing and hopefully we will be the same soon. Thanks again!

Hi, I saw this thread and had to write! My older daughter is now 9, and had exactly the problem your describe.
She was a very late crawler, as every time she tried to pull her legs together to bear down on her knees, they would flip out to what we would call frog legs! She crawled at 13 months and end didn’t walk one step til she was 18 months.
Fast forward and to now & you’d never know, except that she can still do the splits, and funnily enough, she likes to lie in that frog position still now. It looks uncomfortable to me, but she assures me it’s comfy for her 😍
Hope this helps to put your mind at rest.

My son was doing the exact same frog legs thing when trying to crawl! He was very frustrated for a time.

@JVR79 thank you so much this is very reassuring, I really appreciate the response. Yes the frogs legs seems to be the go-to position!
